Not sure how to post links, so hope this works! USS Fitzgerald is back in the water. Of note is the upgraded stacks with the shrouded exhausts like later Arleigh Burke class ships. Looks like some upgrades being incorporated into the repair work.

I'm not sure the stacks were upgraded, inasmuch as the conical exhausts were simply removed, perhaps as part of the maintenance period - the photos in the article (and also on the Navy's own gallery site) are from during the ship's repairs, so there's the possibility that the cones will be added back on at the end.

Went back and looked at some older pics of Fitzgerald. You are correct!

The ship from what I can see seems to be still under reconstruction. If you notice in the photos all the vent lovers are missing. They may have remove the upper portion of the stacks to repair or replace parts within the structure.

Indeed, it is a repair thing! Burke DDGs have those stack caps removed frequently. It would be interesting, however, for a Flight I like Fitz to be upgraded with a few FlightIIA features!

Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance

Here some photos of USS Ross (DDG-71) made 2019 in Kiel:

Ross is a Flight I ship, but modified for defense against ballistic missiles. Her capabilities to defend herself against anti-ship-models are upgraded with a SeaRam launcher, AN/SLQ(v)6 SEWIP Blk II ECM and Mk 59 decoy launchers.

The best 1/700 kit to built her is USS Hopper by HobbyBoss - but it would require the addition of the above mentioned launcher, ECM equipment and decoy launchers.

Some fantastic reference photos. Forrest Sherman is in a yard period right now, and I was wondering if anyone knows if she will get the same upgrades? Which brought up 2 questions:
1. Is there a list of which ships now have Searam?
2. Is there a list of which ships have the Mk 59 decoys?

SeaRAM are on the ships forward deployed to Rota, Spain, for BMD duties because while operating in BMD mode, their older Aegis versions are not able to conduct normal anti-air defence. For now there have been/are five ships: the original four that started in 2015, plus Roosevelt replacing Carney for the second rotation. The other three replacements will come in 2022.

Note that although Roosevelt supposedly has an upgraded Aegis baseline to enable simultaneous BMD and air-defence, it still received the SeaRAM - it may be a hedge in the event that the baseline upgraded was delayed, or they thought it'd be good to have anyway.

On the Mk59 decoys, I think they're pretty wide-spread now that it'd be easier to find ships that don't have those distinctive tubes.

Interesting that Paul Ignatius has also two Phalanx guns.

There is a difference, which I had not noticed for some time: the newer Arleigh Burke - starting with DDG-113 (the first restart) - lack the port anchor.

These tubes? They're the Harpoons.




The newer Burkes have been entering service with only one Phalanx, so nothing unusual there. Some of them are even getting lasers put into that spot!

Sorry, the interesting aspect was that Paul Ignatius (DDG-117) has the forward Phalanx, which is unusual for a newer Flight IIA. There is no second Phalanx, because she has a SeaRAM aft instead of the Phalanx there. Most newer Arleigh Burke are prepared for a forward Phalanx, but have non. Paul Ignatius was completed with no forward Phalanx:

Perhaps she got the forward one when she got the SeaRAM for the deployment to Europe.
