Hi all,
I present my rendition of the Gearing-class destroyer USS Frank Knox (DD-742) in 1/700. She is depicted with Ms33a/28d camouflage which seems to be a rarer scheme, but I really like how it complements the sleek design of this class of ship.
The kit used is Takom's, which is a Snowman Model rebox and comes with a nice drydock model on the side. I have discussed modifications in an associated WiP thread but will cover them here briefly.
- Propellers sanded to appear thinner
- Minor details added to mast and funnels
- PE set from Snowman model (rare but can be found sometimes on ebay/aliexpress)
- Additional unbranded PE set from aliexpress used for large shields alongside the superstructure, as well as mast yardarm
- 5"/38 turrets swapped for Ocean Spirit resin replacements
- Bofors swapped for 5star model PE replacements
- Oerlikons swapped for finemolds replacements
- Rigging is Modelkasten 0.047mm
This model took me just over 2 years to finish from opening the box, largely on account of various real-life activities and other models being concurrently built. Honestly I am just glad I managed to get it finished and now am eager to get started on other projects which will hopefully be done in much less time.
As always, feedback on my work is more than welcome, especially pertaining to photography as I am still learning how to get the most out of my camera.
