Calling all USS Barnegat-class seaplane tender (AVP) fans

I'm actually torn between the two water textures, myself. I'm going to experiment more with the "Choppy Water" texture, as far as the colors.

Well, now I'm not going with any of the Plastruct water effect sheets. I'm going to stick with what I've been using on my 1/700 water bases; Tamiya Ocean Effect Plate.

It looks pretty good for calm bay water of Leyte Gulf, I'd say. The difference this time is that I'm painting the top of the plate, instead of the underside. I've used Sea Blue, Blue Angel Blue, and Midship Blue, all by Model Master. I've used "Pledge with Future" floor wax for the glossy shine. (Is there much difference between the regular "Future" and the "Pledge" stuff?) The top, lighter layer of Midship Blue doesn't have any Future on it, yet.

I worked on some details fore of the stack, today. Antenna trunk, a few lockers, and a log desk.

This photo, from the colleciton of the Oyste Bay's Commanding Officer LCDR Walter W. Holroyd, revealed an important feature that I had wrong. There is a platform forward of, and level with, the top of the dual twin 40mm gun tub. According to the drawings and plans that I have, there was a lower platform, here, with one or two hose/cable/rope reels (depending on the specific AGP), but I haven't seen any drawings, yet, for this particular difference. I never noticed it in the other photos that I have, but its there!

At 1/8 scale the Barnegat class works out to be just shy of 39 inches. 38.95 inches precisely. Beam comes in at 5 inches or 5.13 inches.
Inspiration comes in two forms. A friend of mine�s dad served aboard one. He was telling me about the Barnegat class so I looked them up. I thought they looked nice and had good lines. Next I looked at how the superstructure was shaped and that hooked me. I build radio controlled 1/8 scale ships and the Barnegat class has a good size opening to get into the hull.
My next step was to do my research and I found out that the USCG used the ships after the war. I even found a seaworthiness report on the class. The USCG seemed to think the hull was a good one. I looked for plans of the ship that showed hull lines. I have three different sets of plans, some of them you show in this forum.
I tried to find a 1/8 scale hull and I could not find one so with the help of a friend we built one. My next move is to build a r/c 1/8 scale Barnegat. I hope to post the build on this board as it happens.

Joseph, do you mean 1/8"=1ft scale? Because 1/8th scale would result in a model length of 311'/8 = 38.875' long

From the length of the model you've given, it appears more to be 1/96th scale.

I have seen a 1/96 hull at LoyalHannahDockyard.com (Casco Class USCGC) and thought it was a tempting project, but my scratch building skills aren't up to that scale, yet. I think that one was about 44" long.

Bruce Ross and Roland M. are both scratch building 1/144 Barnegats. Bruce is making the Cook Inlet during WWII and Roland is making the USCGC Coos Bay.

We have gone in thirds on some micro film drawings from the NARA and have about twelve out of seventeen film reels on CDs. There are drawings of specific features of many of the Barnegat class "as they differ from AVP10-13". The drawings are dated during WWII and show details of the various changes that were made to specific ships or hands full of ships at the same time with the same changes. That's where I'm getting my details for the AGP version, Oyster Bay.

Just let me know what specifics you may be looking for. I know that there are awesome plans of the boat crane! Between the three of us, we have a decent collection of photos of various Barnegat/Casco class ships, too.

I'll be anxious to know which ship you choose to portray with your model.

I served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Halfmoon about 35 yrs. ago . She was a converted Seaplane Tender. She was the ship I made rank on, and therefore holds a very special place in my old heart.

I wanted to get a plastic model of a seaplane tender, and reconfigure it to the CGC style.

Any clues on whom might have a plastic model available?

Welcome Aboard!

There are no "plastic" models of the Barnegat / Casco class AVPs / USCGCs. There is only one decent model of this class and that is the Commander Series Models / Iron Shipwrights 1/350 scale Resin model of the USS Mackinac AVP-13.

This is the kit that I have used to portray the USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38, USCGC Bering Strait 382, and the USS Oyster Bay AGP-6 (PT Boat Tender).

I have had to modify each of these kits to more accurately depict the ship of my choice. I was a bit of a beginner at the time and hadn't worked on a resin model, nor had I ever attempted any scratch building. They have, and are, turned out pretty good, so far.

Go to http://ironshipwrights.com/ and look in the 1/350 scale ship models. It is the USS Mackinac that you are looking for. It is $110, but its the only one out there and I'm grateful to Tom and Jon for even thinking about creating this model. My father served on the Duxbury Bay.

Thank you, so much, for the very kind words!

I have been in a bit of a stall, for about two months, with no progress on either the USCGC or the AGP. I hope to get back into the mood, soon. The USCGC is about 80% done. I had intended to finish it up in time for the IPMS USA Nationals, this week, but then I discovered that I really wasn't going to be able to make it to the convention and that took some of the pressure off of finishing it so, early.

I've been rather abscent from this forum, for a while, too.

Once again, thanks, and I'm glad that you appreciate my work and these obscure, little ships.
