Yep....

The camera is not kind for that close a shot. I am working on completing CCG-9 for Essex 1943 now. I think that I would like to do a really nice 1/350 Essex before I go into the detail for the Kearsarge.

I have dumped almost $1k on the Kearsarge so far. The resin stuff is pricey and around $150 was wasted on the ISW Airwing. They are not good and when the L'Arsenal Airwing came out, they saved my bacon. Another $150 on the resin hull for a SCB-27A ship. It is slightly warped end to end. I go back and forth on whether to scratch build the hull from the Toconderoga donor kit and start again. If I were to do it again, I would have only gotten the ISW SCB-27A conversion set. In fact, I would have gotten a second set to put aside and do a 1/350 scale SCB-125 Angled Deck Essex Class later.

Live and learn I say..... :doh_1:

Well, hi all
I have managed to squeeze a bit more room in the house so a 350 carrier might be back on the menu. Just aswell as i've acquired a Tamiya Big E.
Just need to decide on era and accuracy then i can throw caution to the wind.
Options so far:

1. First Tomcat cruise airwing (74-75) (Although i'd build the ship as early 80's, i've seen a Beehive conversion and i think making Pe sets would be required)
2. 1989 (Would use Roosevelts 1991 CVW Set)
3. Last intruder cruise 96
4. OIF 2001

Obviously the last 2 would be more accurate with correct airwings available. Personal preference at the Mo is 1989.

Any thoughts?

Hi Everyone,
I just got back from a mini vacation with my family at Newport, RI. As I was driving I came to the top of a hill and I could see an aircraft carrier with an empty deck that looked abandoned. It was far off the road and probably on USN land and I wouldnt be able to get close to take a few pictures of it.

Any idea which one she is? There was a group trying to save the Saratoga and they couldnt raise enough money and they lost her. Has she been scrapped yet? Could this be the Saratoga awaiting her final fate?

What ever happened to the USS Kennedy was the group from Maine able to secure her as a museum ship?

Thanks Roger DD-555/DD-473 :wave_1:

The 60 on the bow makes her Saratoga, yep.

Out of the box, the Tamiya Kit is 1984-ish which would be CVW-11. I made decals for that airwing and I am finishing her in that era. The last two have airwinig decals but the kit would need to be updated with the various domes and sponson re-work. As I recall, CVW -8(Roosevelts 1991 CVW Set)
did not show up until 2001. 1989 still had a low viz CVW-11 on board.

I couldn't see the number, but it must be the Saratoga. She must be waiting to be turned into a couple thousand Toyota's!!!!!!!!!!!! :heh: :heh: :heh: I understand we can't keep all the obsolete ships used by the USN, but it's a sorry sight to see what happens to these fine ships that served our country and the world. :cry_3:

Mark

There in lies my dilema. I'm fully aware of the whens and whats but will i be able to build with a inaccurate airwing.
I always say go with what you want, its only a hobby. Taking my own advice though, seems to be harder to do !!

I have a set of Roosevelts 91 airwing on route. I have chosen these (For the moment at least) as they give, what i feel a reasonable airwing for the time.
I know they have Hornets which is a bit early for the Enterprise but i guess i need a balance or something. GMM's are a bit bland and only ever provided 1 squadron of corsairs.

I also saw a set somebody made for the 82 Enterprise. Damn fine they looked too. The modeller didn't appear to be seeling them though as he'd put too much work in them. Still the sheets were nice to look at.

Patrice has given me som help with artwork files for coreldraw but thats a whole new can of worms to get to grips with.

Decisions decisions

Simon you are going to do a 1974 beehive BigE? I'll be doing a 1967 beehive BigE. this should be a very interesting thread.

Gt, it's looking that way at the moment.

Mind, the ship will have to wait some time. I'm doing a kill or cure session on the trumpy aircraft.
The A7's and A6's are major PIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the rest nearly as bad. I've got some spare boxes and i'm building stage by stage to as a practice run.

The A7's body halves have to be lined up front and back end. The cockpit and wing areas have to be sanded to match up.

Once i've got the building part sorted then i'll move onto cockpits proper :heh:

I'll also be picking up the Dragon 1/700 Enterprise eventually for reference as i believe the ship stayed pretty much the same until 79
