Re: Calling all IJN Chitose, Mizuho, and Nisshin Fans
I just build Aoshimas wonderfull IJN Chitose as Carrier.
I came now to two porblems. I replaced the kit triple 25 gun with Finemolds Nano Dreads.
They are far better but also smaller?

The problem now is, they are to small on the platform..
Is there an easy fix for? I was thinking of adding some plastic sheet under the turrets to fill the now visible gap.
And there are some parts to add which I don't what there are.
It is part C46 and is used on many platform all over the ship.
Are these perhaps binoculars?

Thanks for help.
Greetings Christian

In my opinion, Christian, it's not that the FM parts are too small, it's that the Aoshima parts that hold them aren't small enough. Those have been sized to hold the older accessory set parts that have been included with the kit. I suppose adding plastic or inserts could work. Or, you could leave it as is; chances are no one will know but us.
Part C-46 are landing lights. There should be 7-8 per side, and they are facing the wrong direction in those instructions. The landing lights should be facing inward! To be sure, I double-checked against the Pleiades Co. 1-200 plans for Chitose, 12-1943.

Thanks Dan.
Yes of course the kitparts are to big. I glued to guns in place. So perhaps I leave it like it is.
Not sure if I can remove them safely.
A good question is, how the NEO parts should look on the kit? In Set 6 there is also a new 126mm gun included.
But when they are also smaller than the kit parts, that set wouldn't helped me either.
The main problem is these sets are hard to get in Germany.
And thanks regarding the lights.
Another question is about C41. These are aslo some landing lights.
Did they had a special color, or are they all red?
If I'm right there are to show the pilot his landing is right.

The 12.7cm turret base in NE06 is the same width as the one on the kit's accessory set. I placed them back to back.
About part C-46: It is more correct to call them illumination lights for nighttime ops.
Part C-41 are the actual landing lights. The block of four is green; the block of two is red. There are no color pics of the actual arrays so this image of the Gakken 1-100 Zuikaku shows a decent example.

I'm nearly finished with my kit and steped into an big error in Aoshimas PE parts.
I wanted to make the masts lowerd down. But sadly with the pe parts from Aoshima that isn't posiible.
You can build them only in the vertical position, because the base is wrong.
So just a warning for all who wnat to build the kit.
Except this I'm really satisfied with the kit.
To correct the error I will use the masts from Flyhawk, but it take some time when I get them.
Here are some pics

Is the currently available (from HLJ anyway) Aoshima 1/700 Nisshin a new tool kit? I remember being disappointed that the Mizuho wasn't.
thanks
Mike

Yes. It's an all new kit. You'll notice that the kit has completely separate deck pieces, whereas anything based on the old Chiyoda/Chitose kit had decking that was partially molded with the hull: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10257718/10/0
The same is true for Mizuho, which is based on the new Chiyoda/Chitose kits. You must have picked up the older kit in error: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10206421/10/0

Re: Calling all IJN Chitose, Mizuho, and Nisshin Fans
Thanks again Dan. I must have got the older Mizuho indeed as it looked like the older Chitose/Chiyoda kits with a few newer parts and the ever present IJN weapons/equipment sprues.
We don't get much in the way of Aoshima or Fujimi ship kits here in the UK sadly since WEM went away.... Anyway the Mizuho looks a big improvement as does the Nisshin on the older kits, must add them to my want list!
thanks
Mike

I have the Aoshima Nisshin now but I can't find any etch sets at all. So the question is, would the cranes and catapults from Chitose/Chiyoda been the same as the Nisshin. If so I might have some spare ones I could use.
thanks

It does seem a bit bizarre that Aoshima has not issued a dedicated PE fret. (Look how spoiled we've all become. :-). )
I would think a Chitose/Chiyoda set or components would do.

I'm building a model of the Nisshin and have a construction question. Around the bridge they provide a clear plastic part that I guess is meant to be windows around the bridge. Is the idea of this you paint everything around that but leave it clear? (I'm assuming that's why they used clear plastic.) If so, then to keep it clear, what kind of blue does one use?
That clear plastic is certainly fragile. Snapped when I trimmed it off the sprue. That's ok I guess as I had to trim the part where it attached to the sprue and probably would be even harder if it was in one piece.

Yes, that is an insert for the bridge windows, and its generally left unpainted. Except for the window frames that divide the windows; those she be the same grey as the superstructure/hull. Most people do leave it clear (or replace with just PE window frames). It could be interesting to paint the back/inside only of the piece a shade of dark blue. I wonder how that would look.
Doesn't the kit come with two clear window frames?

Yes, it comes with two frames although only one of them is used. It looks like they might be the same size.
Paint the frames that divide the window, eh? I'm going to need a smaller brush....

Even a toothpick lightly covered with paint might work.
Mizuho and Nisshin's upper bridge structures are nearly identical.
And a view of Chitose's bridge windows for good effect.
