Okay, let's try this again.

I've always been facinated by the British-built foreign warships, especially Agincourt and Erin. I've never built the Combrig kit, as I feel I couldn't do her justice because I've never built resin before. If anyone is building the kit and would like to post here, tha's fine. Just try to stay on topic, not go on about the model

Combrig makes some great kits. I just picked up the Erin, and have the Agincourt as well. They are reasonably priced from outlets like Pacific Front Hobbies. Take the plunge, you won't regret it!!

IIRC, Erin was considered to be better design, albiet a little more cramped, than Iron Duke.

HMS Erin was very similar in main aramament layout to the Iron Duke class, wasn't she? Not quite as elegant, but nevertheless a good design.

As for building the kit, I'll build the Combrig USS Porter first, and then go for something larger.

As if we needed another opinion, The combrig kit Is every bit as nice as i could hope, crisp, clean and well detailed. Can't wait to get started!

Okay, I'm still working on my Erin, but she's nearing (slowly) completion. The build has been great so far, the only fiddly part being the tripod mast assembly. I might buy some rails for her soon, anyone know which to get? I painted her in camouflage gray and dark tan (slightly lightened) with neutral gray steel decks. The camouflage gray is a little bit to light, but should look fine with weathering. I'm not going to rig her, the mast being to fragile to withstand the pressure. Maybe if I used stretched sprue though... Any suggestions? The flag will come from a skywave decal sheet. I'll post pics as soon as I can.

I have a question on Erin's main deck (Also put this to Rob in my e-mail). On the forward section, Combrig has omitted planking detail. Is this correct? If so, what color should I paint it?

I'll try and pop into the Dock Museum tomorrow and check this area on the builder's model.

Just checked my photos and there is no plank detail in them when I adjusted the brightness. I will still call in and have a look though.

The pics you posted the links to show this area painted the same as the deck. No planking there.

The way it is printed on screen, not surprised. What I suspect you miss is an underscore between my first name and surname.

To answer your questions:

etch: - best bet is WEM's Tiger fret - take your time railing the deck edges over the casemates, they are a bit fiddly.

Deck - where the deck is flat it should be AP507A, vertical colours should be AP507C.

I would replace the masts with brass rod (I do this on all my ships anyway).

Anyone know of any good photos or plans of the Agincourt's foward superstructure? From plans and photos, it looks like there is a long inclined ladder going up to the first platform of the bridge, and I'm trying to figure out where add it on the Combrig 1/700 kit (which doesn't come with it). I've got Burt's book, but it really doesn't give a good view of the area. I've also tried places like Maritime Quest, NHC, etc.

In WW 1 RN ships always seem to have corticene decks for the superstructure decks. The rest of the steel decks should be in dark grey with some exceptions!

Hi Martin,

From looking at pictures and plans I think you might need to make an opening on the first platform in order to accomodate the ladder. I would align the opening with the relative position found on the plans you have. I hope it helps you out a bit. Pictures of the aft side of the superstructures is always hard to come by no matter what ships we are building I've had similar troubles with Repulse and I still haven't found exactly the picture I would like. The darn funnel always gets in the way !
