Hello everybody,

Ever since the Hiei was more or less indefinitely postponed I started with a different model, though at a much slower pace.

This time I decided to take a ship from the stash, the HMS HOOD 1/350 from Trumpeter. (In the future a Bismarck with Pontos will follow ;) )
The idea was that the model should have some semblance to the 1941 may outfit of the ship but I don't desire total accuracy so do forgive me for taking liberties with reality here and there.

Image

For extra details I bought the Eduard and Flyhawk detail and resin sets, which were complemented by an Artwox wooden deck and the Infini Royal Navy winches set.

I tried to find out which color would be fairly accurate in painting the ship. Biut apparently there is a lot of confusion and in the end I decided to go with XF-82 for the 507A, XF-24 for the Boat deck, XF-79 for the bridge decks and XF-09 Hull red for the Hull. I made a piece of paper on which I also tested XF-66 but I found xf-82 more blueish and more appealing to the eye.

The fit of the kit is modestly annoying to absolutely terrible in some places. The boat deck was warped, the hull required ducktape in order to force the 2 halves on each other, and at some places putty was needed to fill the seems. The fit of the shafts was not great as well, so putty was applied, and now it needs sanding.

The flyhawk set includes a sizeable amount of ammo lockers to be folded, these are really nice. The flyhawk PE in general looks nice, but bends a little too easily,

Image

I also got some Flyhawk resin turrets with blastbags as replacement for the trumpeter turrets, these were not accurate in shape and didn't look good either in my opinion,

At this point I have a large amount of stuff done, Funnels, Mast and tripod are all built. What is left are the small things like life-boats, Pom-poms, quads and railings.

Image

The Funnels and their bases are really nice, for the doors and Hatches i solely use Eduard, the railings are a mix, on the funnel base of the 2nd funnel It is flyhawk, most other railing currently installed is eduard, since these are easier to use as they are less flexible

The funnel caps are not aligned 100%, The forward cap was replaced because the eduard piece was really out of place, this one is better, but still mehh, don't think I'll replace it though.

This antenna was a pain to make, that it turned out like this without being one massive glue clog is something I am very happy about

And here she sits before the Yahagi and the Hamakaze,

Greetings and stay healthy,
Gerco :wave_1:

I had planned to build the pom poms this evening, turned out that was a little optimistic, one of these pom poms took me more than an hour, so after just one it was enough for the evening, but the pom pom looks nice.

Your Hood looks just like the marketing pics for the PE companies! Really looking good there, especially the pom poms. Worth every hour.

That’s some good looking pictures you are sharing, great work.

I am amazed by the speed you seem to be working with, you are good way on the way already since May.

Keep treating them Pom-poms with love I say and they will all look great (=

Thanks Chippmunk, I indeed tend to go relatively fast compared to the other people on the forum, most likely cuased by a part character and a part study rythm.

Nevertheless here comes the last major update of this build. All the elements have been added. All the major paint colors have been added as well. I have been working on and of about an hour a day for the past 2 weeks and today the whole day, forgot to posy pictures so there is a amount of stuff covered in this update, my apologies.

On finishing the sub assemblies and the first paint work

The paint scheme turned out nice, the paintwork looks better than last time with the Hamakaze, but the black waterline strip has bled underneath the tape, thats a bother that happens every time I have to paint such a strip.

all major paintwork was done with the airbrush, only the touchup and details as well as the lettering on the nameplate were done by brush.

next step will be applying a clear coat, currently I am doubting between clear gloss and semi gloss from tamiya, anybody a good advice which would be best? I am afraid clear would be too glossy, and semi gloss too flat

here are the pictures, a lot

Tamiya Hull Red is probably most inaccurate color in its range. Should really be used with XF7, XF10, XF60 in various quantities based on what is appealing on the eye. It is just way too dark by any sense or logic. If anything, the base paint for XF9 should be white paint or primer at least to have it appear lighter.

Otherwise all very cool, nice Hood there!

Thanks Pascale,

As for the color, I do agree with that, but the choice for vanilla hull red was made on purpose because

- I like the look of a dark hull
- the Hood associations advised color for below waterline antifouling red is quite dark as wel

Usually with the IJN hulls I mix normal red and a little tip of yellow to get a brighter color or red and brown for KM ships.

This must be one of the longest posts in terms of the number of pictures that I have yet posted at this forum,

But betTer a little too much than not enough, and I personally like build logs full of pictures

With the exception of some minor touchups and the Vickers quads which are still being produced at north star I think, I have finished the model. It has been painted fully, varnished with x-22, and weathered. I have let go of the try to make an accurate Hood since in May 1941 the weathering would likely be minimal and I don't think it would have the canvascover supports in place, given the care the crew gave to the ship and the fact alone that the last paint job for the lower hull was only 4 months back as well as the fact that she was going out for a fight and the guns would interfere with the supports.

That being said, I do think next ship I'll experiment a little with some pre/post shading with the airbrush to break apart the monotonous colors on the larger areas like the hull and superstructure. The weathering didn't enable me to produce the effects in that area that I had in mind.

Now about the weathering,

I use AK enamel bottles for weathering, they have some sets and loose bottles which I all bought. This is my first time using them since I only used a Vallejo rust bottle before. Contrary to the Yahagi I did not use the Tamiya rust "make-up" in order to prevent a too rusty look.

From the AK I used various streaking grimes, a rust streak type, and salt streaks. I wanted a line of salt along the waterline. I also used grime for red hulls. I applied that to the whole hull and then polished it with a piece of cloth damp with white spirit. This gave a little bit of discoloring to the lower hull breaking the single tone color apart.

All other effects were applied by brushes. I struggled with the anchors to have a nice rust flow downwards, and meh I am still not very happy about it but as of yet, I couldn't make it better.

The Nameplate was coated in tamiya black and xf-22

I use the Trumpeter supplied base to put the ship on.

And the rigging was put on as the last step, using uschi rigging in 0.03mm.

now the pictures,
