As much as I want to start with it today, I'm probably going to put it in the closet for awhile and work up a Tamiya Yamato first. I've built resin tanks and A/C before but not a resin ship and I'd really hate to screw up a $500 kit. I'll get back into the swing with the Yamato and then start the Montana.

What's everyone been up to?

Post by GrizzlyBear »

Hi guys,

After a long hiatus, I'm back here agin among the 'Montana People'. Life got to the point where I just wasn't doing much of anything aside from work and sleep.

Now that things are somewhat better, I'm thinking of finally starting my Montana.

So Eric & Abram, how's progress going on your Montana's? Any new pics?

camo scheme

If the Montanas were built, what camo schemes do you think they would have used had the war continued into 1946-47 (or later!)

I presume that by that time the neutral grays would be in use rather than the 'blues'

Probably similar to what the other ships of the day wore, Ms.22 or 21, I think.

Hi everyone. :wave_1: Been a long time since I posted here. Sorry about that. :( Just letting everyone know that I'm getting back into working on my best friend's Montana ship again after a very long absence and procrastinating on it for probably 9 months. Anyway, here's a few pics to show what I'm working on or what is done. There's still some touch ups and clean up to do in some areas, but that will all be taken care of soon. ;) The ship is being painted in Ms.22 scheme as if she had appeared late in the war. I'll be finishing painting the main guns this afternoon and then proceeding to work on superstructure parts this week.

Hey!

Good to hear from you again!

From the pics, your Montana is looking REAL good! Hope to hear and see more from you.

As for me, I also haven't been posting here in awhile. My fiancee and I broke up, and I'm in the really fun process of selling my house & property and buying a new place down around Dover, Delaware (where it's actually affordable to live). Since I should have some $ left over after I buy a new place, I'm planning on finally getting my Montana going!

All we need now to make this complete, is to hear from Abram...

EJM,
She looks beautiful so far. thanks for sharing pics!

I've been waiting and gathering funds for my build. I'm hoping someone will come out with dual 5"/54 mounts! We shall see.

Grizzly, hows your Montana coming along?

Grizz: Sorry to hear about your fiancee and about moving. I hope things get better for ya soon. Looking forward to seeing your Montana build in future weeks/months. ;)

Timmy: Yep, it's big! 32 inches long and 4 inches wide. :)

Abram: You mean nobody has come out with 5"/54 cal. guns yet as aftermarket parts? Darn. :mad_1: Well, I don't want to wait a long time for those to come out, so I guess I'll just use the 5"/38 cal. guns. I know they're not proper, but I'll make up some sort of fictional story about why the ship has them.

Hehe, nice mascot pic =)

Would it not be possible to just extend the length of the barrels on the 5"/38 and call it done?

No, the 5"/54 guns were bigger and in a bigger gun house than the 5"/38 guns.

Before I forget and head off to bed tonight, I've got a few questions if anyone can help. ;)

1. What color were the life rafts and ship's boats on a ship that had Ms.22 scheme? Were they the same Haze Gray as the vertical surfaces of the ship?
2. Usually, welding tanks and other cylinders were kept on decks in the open on ships, right? What colors were these painted?
3. Not sure if I'll use photoetch floater net baskets for the ship. If I do, what would be a good way to scatchbuild the nets to put in the baskets?
4. What color were the fire hoses and fire hose racks on battleships? Most of the time, I see them painted as white. Is this correct?

EJM, I think during WWII everything was painted to math the bulkhead it was attached too, otherwise it would defeat the purpose of the camouflage. If you don't want to go about scratchbuilding the floater nets L'arsenal makes a set of floater net baskets with resin floater nets, from pictures I've seen they look very good and I would recommend them

Ok, I've run into a bit of a stumbling block. I'm not going to be able to put the ship's boats on the sides of the Montana like the way the IOWA class has theirs. I've got too much 5" gun emplacements and other 20mm gun galleries on the sides of the ship. I'm going to put a few boats (2 or 3) on the after deck near the large 20mm gun gallery that you see on the left of this pic behind turret #4:
Image

The question is: What do the boats sit on/in? Do they sit on/in some sort of cradle or movable dolly? If so, how can I scratchbuild them? If some are available in photoetch, I'm afraid I won't be able to afford them, so please don't suggest that route.

As you can see from the images, a lot of gun emplacements/galleries have been added, as well as a few smaller items such as floater net baskets, life rafts, etc. I still have a long way to go, but I think I can be done by the end of September maybe. :thumbs_up_1: Some things that I am uncertain about are the following:
1. Putting a single 20mm gun on either side of the No. 4 turret.
2. Putting a single 20mm gun on the port and starboard sides amidships. You can see this in one of the pics where it is located between the two 5" gun housings.

Great progress so far on the Montana. Can't wait to see the finished model. It should look very busy with all the armament and details :thumbs_up_1:

Nice looking build - she's one big a$$ ship! I've been toying with getting the IHP 1/700 version.

Being a late comer to this thread, lemme get something straight - the 1/350 YMW kit doesn't come with the proper 5 inch gun turrets??

Martin, I'm pretty sure the YMW kit has the correct mounts (can't seem to find pics of it anywhere anymore).

EJM isn't using the YMW kit, he's using a resin hull a friend made and canabilizing Tamiya Missouri kits.

EJM, Your Montana is looking beautiful! Can't wait to see her finished! Makes me want to start working on mine :thumbs_up_1:
