Have any of you guys ever met a vet from the Arizona ? I know that there is a crewman who attends the Reading WW2 Weekend every June in Reading PA. Maybe if you can find one they would have some definite ideas about teh painting of the ship. My great Grandfather complained that" all he ever did in the Navy was paint anything but the officers ."

Survivors accounts conflict. Who do you trust? Are you prepared to tell one of them they're wrong?

No, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Ay least thank them for their service. You may find out somethings you never knew by talking to them.

I'm not saying don't do it or that it's not invaluable. I'm saying you open a can of worms when you start trying to use survivor accounts as evidence.

For example, Don Stratton knows he saw a torpedo hit Arizona. Post-attack salvage and inspection, day-of-the-attack accounts, etc., don't support this. Yet he still knows what he saw. Do you include that or throw it out if you're discussing a topic that his insight might be relevant to? What if he said he remembered painting the ship blue?

Well, I've got a couple pictures of my Trumpeter 1/200 Arizona in progress along with a request for opinions. This is turret #3 and in particular I'm looking for thoughts on applying the very tiny grab handles that run along the right and left side of the turret (in this case, just the right). I'm wodering two things: 1) does anyone have good pictures of this area and 2) are these really worth it? They are an abosulte pain to install and while they look ok in this picture, I'm just not sure I'm really improving things much.

Looks nice but the ladder should be attached to the catapult. Easy fix. And the railing is a bit more complicated than that. Don't feel bad, I believe that's why we don't see more completed 1/200 Arizonas. The kit looks great until you start checking out what's wrong. I've been trying to correct all I can but I've found that I have to just let it go, or I'll never finish this monster. All things considered, I should have bought the paper Arizona model. If you have to scratch build everything then why pay over $200 for the kit and $100 plus for corrections and additions. But if you're just a builder, its a great kit!

I presume you mean the ones on the top edges of the turrets?

Yes. I'm having a struggle about how much of an upgrade these are for the pain of installing them. I had to makeshift a way to even get them glued in place. Then sand down excess superglue, then replace rivets. They don't look bad, but I don't know if they look good enough to do this on the other three turrets.

Does the wooded deck thats available for this kit have the correct deck planking layout?

The ArtWox deck has the same incorrect planking layout (2 plank shift) as the kit.

Looking at pictures of the KA Models MK1 deck, it appears the correct 4 plank shift is used, but from what I can find you have to get the PE set as well, not just the deck.

The pictures of the Nuatilus wood deck leave a lot to be desired. The mail deck does not appear to have the ends pf the planks scribed and the rings of the wood used are very pronounced and distracting. The center deck seems to be planked correctly.

I am still waiting to see what Scaledecks come out with. Their WEB site still says the deck is coming, but I have not seen an update for many months.

It's totally subjective and something you need to decide for yourself. I have a lot of photos of Arizona, but no really good close-ups of those railings that I have permission to post. Perhaps another technique would be acceptable; do you have any sheet or rod styrene and a "chopper"?

Just my two cents. I think the rails look great. They add a lot to the finished piece. The reference photos I have show those rails. I have the KA Models set and the deck planking is correct. Pontos is the only one I know that has added the edge joints to their wood decks but I have not seen one for the Arizona.

Anyway, it looks great. If you don't mind doing it I think they're worth the effort. Have fun!

Group;

I just recived the PE set from Tom's. I did notice on the kit, she has a bit of a plastic lip around the top side of the hull. Does this need to be sanded down to the deck for the PE railings. Seems like the railings may sit high on the deck if this is not removed.

Yes. If it's not there on the real thing, remove it.

A little of both; there was a gutter at the deck edge, with a raised lip/coaming at the VERY edge that was part of the hull shell. You can see photos of it on other ships:
http://images.google.com/hosted/life/a0 ... c1b29.html
http://images.google.com/hosted/life/72 ... 7839e.html (Mislabeled - this is a cruiser)

So the representation of a slightly thick portion that is not wood is fairly correct. To do it absolutely correct, the deck would need to stand above the edge a bit, with railings that had a bottom "rail", and then posts that sat inboard of that rain (look at the cruiser photo) so PE railings aren't going to be 100% accurate anyway. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Has Trumpeter release the OS2U aircraft in 1/200th as a stand-alone kit? I am thinking of building the Arizonia for the period after the 1941 refit, but before 7 December. I would like to have all three aircraft display, so I need an additional aircraft and decals.
