Although it is high lighted in blue, the stem still looks like those on the Bismark, which would be wrong for Tirpitz. Tirpitz's stem should be much straighter.

think its the same rendering as Bismarck , with some changes in midship section, so we have to wait till we see the real one. If the price is not as mad as all these Japanese Battleships this year, I will buy and compare with my Bismarck.

I've been wondering the same myself, since I am just about to start work on my "ultimate" Bismarck project. I've found that the main color appears to be a light gray, which I am going to guess is RAL 7001 according to one of the big Bismarck websites, linked here:

Vallejo has a Model Air color that is similar to RAL 7001 but it looks a little dark to me...it's very hard to get exact matches sometimes. I didn't see any matches for MM but there was a Gunze match...you can see from the conversion chart from finding RAL 7001 in the top chart:

Personally I'm going to experiment with Tamiya's XF-19 gray and see what happens there.

There are schemes for both 1940 and 1941; personally I was going to do the March 1941 camo because I thought it was the most colorful, with all turret tops gray and red-bordered swastikas.

Finally, if anyone has any advice/suggestions on PE sets to get for a superdetailed Bismarck please let me know! I picked up the GMM set when I bought the kit, but was wondering if the WEM super set is really that much better. I'm probably going to go ahead and splurge on the WEM deck and AA sets too...thanks!

You search a real big PE set for 1:350 Bismarck? I think its the one from Revell.....look here
Dont look only at the pictures�take a look in the manual, there are pdf files on their site. The pictures unfortunately don�t show all parts. If you order both sets, you have enough PE to build.
If its the one from Tamiya , use WEM if you want superdetailing.

I presume the waterline "line" was black, although in the link it appears to be darker than dark grey (RAL 7024).
The painted waves are probably flat white!

According to WEM's Colourcoats page, the color for the boot stripe is SCHIFFSBODENFARBE III GRAU I [Dark Grey Boot-topping], which is KM 05 in their line of enamels.

Alright, so I have all the PE frets ordered as well as metal barrels, but I realized I don't have any flags...does anyone know of flag sets for DKM ships? There are a couple "flags" included with the Tamiya kit that I have but they are woefully inadequate. Thanks, enjoy the new year!

William, the paint list provided in David's link is okay but as to the steel decks, the colour used was NOT the 'Dunkelgrau 2' (WEM KM06). Dunkelgrau 2 was matching RAL 7024 and this was used for the dark panels on bow and stern as well for the dark grey turret tops and gun barrels (and other horizontal surfaces during 'Rhein�bung'...).

The steel decks were painted in 'Dunkelgrau 1' / 'Trittfeste Au�endecksfarbe 59' which matches RAL 7016. It was the same shade/hue as the paint for the boot topping (or underwater hull of submarines) but without the antifouling ingredients. If you look closely at photos from ships painted in the so-called Baltic Scheme you will see that the boot-topping is clearly darker than the dark grey bow/stern panel.

can someone define the steel decks? i was aware that certain decks were the darker gray but you see so many different schemes. does anyone really know the exact deck colours.i have seen so many drawing and such with some decks painted and some in wood and in others a different deck is wood or steel

Please have a look at this, not very detailed and ... yes... another illustration, but here are the steel decks:

Red = Steel deck, painted in RAL 7016, as mentioned above

Blue = Steel deck, painted RAL 7016 BUT covered with wooden deck cratings, presumably a nice brownish colour

Green = Steel deck, painted RAL 7016 BUT covered with slatted wood covers, presumably a beige-ish colour

Yellow = Steel deck, painted RAL 7016 BUT covered with ??? ==> I have no idea, could be the same as for either 'Blue' or 'Green'

Everything else was planked with teak... (Tirpitz was a bit different regarding the decks...)

Again: RAL 7016 was also the appearance of the boot-topping... and DARKER in colour than the 'Dunkelgrau 2'

Olaf, thanks for the help regarding deck colors! I was going to go ahead and paint all the wooden decks the same color, and the same for steel (and use the same dark gray for both turret tops and steel decks).

In case anyone is interested, I have compiled a short list of all the extra goodies I will be using on my Bismarck in case any other modelers out there are as insane as I myself am:

-WEM Ultimate Bismarck set
-WEM Bismarck deck plating
-WEM Kriegsmarine Anti-aircraft details set
-GMM Bismarck/Tirpitz set (this is probably unnecessary with the WEM frets but I had gotten it along with my tamiya boat off ebay)
-Black metal anchor chain: https://www.freetimehobbies.com/index.a ... tegory=591 (the chain links look a little big but it's much better than the molded chains, and its already painted)
-Special masking tape for the wooden decks: http://www.jammydog.com/index.htm (I will use a technique similar to the one described in this article: http://www.cybermodeler.com//hobby/buil ... 8001.shtml which is much simpler/cheaper than using a real wooden deck!)

I'm not quite sure who these experts are or from where they are coming from but there is a problem with exactly the colours we are talking about. The steel decks should be the same hue as the boot-topping (both matching RAL 7016) and the grey turret tops (RAL 7024) should be lighter than the steel decks. On this model both the steel decks and the dark grey turret tops are vitually the same. I understand the scale-effect but I guess Peter has overcooked it a bit...

The rest of the colours is great - and the whole model of course!

I wrote a PM to him (regarding another paint issue) on another message board and got no reply... hmmm...

In light of all the information on paints (many thanks to those of you who contributed!) I think I might go ahead and try the WEM enamels, since they have all the required colors for the Bismarck, and I won't have to be mixing my own colors in a vain attempt to match theirs.

Out of curiosity, how many tins do you think I would need for the light gray? It's what I'll be using the most of at least. I think one tin should suffice for both of the dark grays. Thanks in advance.
