Great build of an old kit, Willie. You've shown that you don't need a lot of aftermarket parts to turn out a beautiful model.

Hi all,
Thanks a lot for your kind remarks.
For anybody who is interested, a more complete series of pics can be found at :
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... /index.htm
I have to say that it has been my pleasure to build this thing in your company.
This is the first model I have built with full use of internet archives, forums and support and help from friends from all over the world. The pleasure of modelling runs au pair with the happiness of meeting new friends who share the same interests and hobbies, and are at the same time kind enough as to share their large amount of knowledge too.
I am but very happy of being a member of this forum and having the chance of learning from you all.
Very best regards from Spain,
Willie.

Re: Calling all USS Wickes and Clemson class Four Piper fans
Dear all,
I wish to build a 4-piper for a long time. Although I am a die-hard 1/700 waterline builder, I bought the 1/400 Mirage Kit of USS Noa, i.e. the version with a seaplane. However, there seems to have so few info for the ship in that particular configuration, or they are quite confusing (eg. the Squadron book shows a catapult while the kit does not). So, I am considering to convert it into an ordinary Clemson class in pre-war fit (considering the USS Paul Jones DD-230 actually). Does the kit supply enough parts for such conversion? What modifications are neccessary? I've bought the GMM PE also.
With Regards

Re: Calling all USS Wickes and Clemson class Four Piper fans
I see that Sirmarmodels plans to release a 1/72 Wickes class destroyer marketed as HMS Campbeltown (ex-USS Buchanan DD-131) one of obsolete warships given to Great Britain in 1940 under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement & later used in the March '42 St Nazaire raid. Its to be released in the original 4-piper configuration & expected mid-next year.
Should make for a nice companion to the existing Revell subs & Flower corvette, as well as Lindberg's pending I-20.

It'll probably 100% kill any interest in the Combat models vac-form "model" as well.

New Book on USS Edsall
New Book on USS Edsall:
Just received a copy of brand new book entitled A Blue Sea of Blood by Donald M.Kehn Jr, all about the USS Edsall. Very intriguing so far, and there are some stills taken from a Japanese propaganda film showing a four-piper literally being blown out of the water. I have long had a photo of a four-piper being shelled, but it was captioned as USS Pope and it was always a mystery to me as it doesn't match accounts of the Pope's sinking. It would appear that the photo is a doctored enlargement of the sinking of Edsall taken from the movie. Chilling to look at it now after all this time and realizing what ship it really is.
I'll post again once I finish the book, it's very good so far. The stories of the lost destroyers Edsall, Pillsbury, and Jarvis continue to grab my attention, along with the rest of the saga of the futile defense of the East Indies in 1942.
Cheers
Rob

Anyone built the Mirage 1/400 four pipers? I am currently working on USS Noa. Kit offers her with her Seaplane sirca 1940.
So far I am impressed with the kit and I purchased the GMM set for these models and I am very excited to see how she comes together.

Re: Calling all USS Wickes and Clemson class Four Piper fans
I actually had another question too.
USS Stewart (DD 224) which was captured on Java and raised by the Japanese as P-102; was her armament replaced with japanese weapons or were here primary guns retained throughout the war?
The photos I have seen show no weapons aboard but these are after her recapture. she clearly has a platform forward of the bridge that looks like a 25mm position so I can infer that but other than that I see no clues as to her IJN armament.
Does anyone have any insight on this as I was thinking about taking an old revell Ward from my stash and making a P-102 out of her so if anyone knows or knows a good reference that would be helpful.
Thanks

In 1945, the P-102 had 2 single 8cm guns, 16 25mm guns (4x2 and 8x1) and 4 13mm MG (Vickers type).
Also it had 2 DC racks, 2 Y-Guns (DC throwers) and 2 single DC throwers (type 81).
I'm converting the Mirage HMS Montgomery to the P-102, so if you want, just PM me and I can email you the photos I have of that ship.
Happy modelling

Joo,
Where are you getting your weapons or are you making them from Scratch? I didn't there were any IJN weapons available in 1/400 or I would consider using the mirage kits as a base for this.
pitty that they are belly up as they were planning to release a P-102.

I'm not yet sure if I'll make my P-102 with guns, because there are no guns in that scale.
I'll try to use 1/350 scale guns just to see if they don't look to big. The DC racks and throwers will be there thou' and they'll be home-made PE and scratch.

Re: Calling all USS Wickes and Clemson class Four Piper fans
My dad was in command of USS Long (DMS-12, nee DD-209) when she was lost to kamakaze attacks. Iron Shipwrights has a Wickes/Clemson 1/350 model that I think might may be converted to DMS-12. Does anybody know of a resource that has information about the DMS conversions? I've only seen one picture that shows the stern of a fast minesweeper and it shows little detail.
Thanks in advance,
Al

In response I would suggest WR's "Flush Deck Destroyers in WW Two" b y Glenn R. Arnold which should assist with the conversion of the afore mentioned model to DMS 12.
