Calling all Unryu-class (雲龍) fans

ah3000mk1 - the clear deck is a cool concept, but tough to use unless you are intent on a cutaway type of view. I do like the inclusion of the hangar deck by Aoshima. I know I've seen another carrier kit with a clear deck option - for some reason I recall one of the new Essex or Independence class CV kits as having that option. I recall the deck being painted all around the edge, with a large area left open. Can't find the photo.

Trumpeter's Essex features that clear deck. Unfortunately it has no detail on it. I suppose that you could cut both and combine them but that doesn't sound really easy. I guess clear plastic just doesn't have the same elasticity to be molded with crisp detail?

The JMSDF Shimokita LST also has a clear option. The best way to make it look right in my opinion is to fade it in on the deck. just leave "clouds open for view" . Kind like what Dan just posted.

What number Model Art was that Dan? and how did you achieve that frosted look?

It's vol # 852, Bill, and I've no idea how it was done.

I believe they molded it using a frosted-clear plastic, unlike the smooth-clear Dragon versions.

From the images, it's clear that it's frosted indeed. Maybe something to do with how well clear plastic holds detail or how much polishing it requires in the mold so it won't look lumpy or rough, a bit of grain something we don't mind about in opaque plastic.

I recall Dragon's trully transparent decks are almost devoid of detail?

Regardless, I so want one of these right now:)

If you look carefully at the outline of the area left unpainted in the photo, that area is represents what would have been covered by wooden planking.

Hmmm. In my exuberance, I failed to note the frostiness of the plastic. Guess i can slack off on some of those teeny-tiny aircraft landing gear...won't see-em! To see the hanger, the opaque deck could be sectioned and peeled back, as with Hiryu after a visit from a few SBD's!

Seriously though, I appreciate the photos, I'll try this as soon as I dare think my painting skills are close enough. A good looking ship design.

There's a Japanese modeler, whose name escapes me, who scratchbuilds carrier islands in 1/72, 1/100, & 1/144 scale, mostly IJN. I meant to post these months ago, a 1/72 Katsuragi. Looks completely accurate to me.

Does anyone have the Aoshima Unryu "SP" version kit. I am trying to determine if it DOES include the two PE frets that are shown on the side of the box...the text is all in Kanji pertaining to it.

Thanks Timmy..Thats what started my confusion as the kit box (side panel) shows two, including a rather extensive one described in this thread as a separate add-on. I've never seen an add-on PE set advertised on a kit box (but rather showing them as kit contents).

Hi, I have the Katsuragi kit and it did not contain ANY PE... it looks as the the "SP" has a small fret.
My box shows the "add-on" PE set also but I did have to buy it separately and I remember them being pretty proud of it, almost as much as the kit.
This is a very nice kit, but...the aircraft are not up to par.

A correction to my previous post; when I was looking over the instructions for the first time I noticed that it showed the assembly of some pretty intricate aircraft... so I dug through the sprue packs and found them hiding in the clutter of the other parts. Strangely my kit also included a set of the old airplanes too. So the kit does contain some nice planes (but not nearly enough)

What's the difference between Fujimi's Toku-69 (kit# 43109)and Toku-70 (kit# 43110) versions of their 1/700 Unryu kit?

Is the Toku 70 a new tool?

In that case, what would be wrong with the Toku-69 kit that could be easily fixed in the later kit?
