Another shot of Invincible, from a period postcard. This postcard is the first I've bought was actually used. It was mailed from Invincible to a gent in the 1st Destroyer Flotilla. The postmark says "London", and it looks like is says "August 1914"....

A few more. Hopefully these photos are useful to anyone interested in and/or building models of these ships. Again, these are from period postcards I acquired off e-bay:

I've seen a plan of either one of the invincibles or indomitables... I can't recall the class, I just know it was one of those 2 classes.

I'm pretty sure it was published by Model Boats, a UK magazine. Now it may be old and no longer on sale? I don't know... I just recall seeing it.

Found it, it's INFLEXIBLE.

https://www.myhobbystore.com/2225/-Infl ... M1246.html

A semi-scale INVINCIBLE (for RC) is also listed on that page.

Hope it helps.

My father served on HMS New Zealand. The HMNZ naval museum has considerable memorabilia of the ship including the ships silver, the captain's cabin furniture and a large photo collection. They also have a detailed model of the ship, diaries, ships bell etc etc.
A small book was published about the ship in 1919 and I have a rare copy which was my father's.

[/Inflexible went to the US in Autumn 1909. A wiki page has "She was the temporary flagship of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Hobart Seymour while in New York for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in September 1909."

Maritimequest has a page of images of her during this visit. But your image is V good.

Hello, does someone knows what was the "cylinder" fitted on top of the main mast?

The black horizontal cylinder with 4 'zeros'? I've seen similar things to that before on RN ships .. usually on the larger type of cruiser. It's a range display device.

If you go to the maritimequest link I posted, then look at page 2 of the images, 2nd image down is HMS Drake with the same device on her foremast on the front face of the spotting top.

In misty conditions, some ships of the squadron may not be able to see the enemy. This device shows others what range the host ship is firing at. The idea was taken a stage further in the latter part of the war with bearing scales on turrets: now ships in company can obtain the range and bearing of a engaged ship and thus have an idea of the enemy location. But they didn't fire indiscriminately at unseen ships as that was a waste of expensive amunition, it wore equipmment out and the shells would probably miss anyway.

Thank you for the explanation, I wonder how much could be seen with the ship at full speed enveloped in her own smoke...

Dina, are you thinking of making one of the class?

...I'm trying to reject this new interest in WWI battlecruisers ( and battleships ), but I know I'm going to loose, and soon or later I will buy a WWI battlecruiser. I love the early designs and New Zealand is well documented, add that Combring is going to release her in 1/350 and 1/700 ... well I just need to know how many money this world recession will leave in my wallet, at the moment I'm oriented to 1/700 :heh:

...just to add some contents to the post here a good selection of large pictures:

Great photo. It was taken in the Hudson River in NYC. That bridge in the background is still there - that is Riverside Drive.

That's a great link! :-) The best bit is they are the full size versions.

There's a web page showing a 1:350 model on the web somewhere. It's one of the 12in BCs. I'd like to find that again but ... It's colour images of a full hulled model on a stand and built, iirc, to a pretty high standard.
