Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Nice job Hank on the door hinges, especially to the training and elevating mechanism access doors. Looking forward to seeing a print of this mount. I printed one in 1:120 just for laughs. Many hundreds of these were produced in one form or another, equipping destroyers, cruisers, carriers and battleships.

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Tom,
Thanks - I appreciate the interest & input!!
Now, on the 3rd design edition and also a 3rd printing - just took it off the printer and it came out (as far as I can tell with the supports still in place) without any issues!! Here's a couple pix of what this edition looks like design wise: The first two prints revealed the need to beef up the hand grabs and a few other details on the sides/back face which tended to be weak. Everything printed well this 3rd Edition, so it's drying now.
At this point I have all the parts printed for assembly/painting and will hope to have a photo or two to show perhaps tonight. I've got the display base designed/printed and have a revision to it in the works - I'm trying to finalize the design today - this will be a partial mount location on the 01 Level amidships (Mount 55 or Mount 57).
Also, have an excellent printing of STODDARD's fwd stack, so work on that project is ongoing, as well.
Hank

Hank:
The illustration looks quite good. With printing there is often some development required which you have done. What we have here is an illustration of how printing and ship modeling works, there is mini project after mini project. here you have executed a mini modeling project.
When i went through my Missouri photos for details of the deck and superstructure surrounding the mounts, I was rather surprised that some of the mounts were not all centered in their deck houses.
Cheers: Tom

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Tom,
Yes, it took 3 editions to make sure things were correct - and consequently 3 different prints to get the parts beefed up enough to survive my handling calamities!!! I actually got the parts cleaned up and painted today - the barrel assemblies will require a touch up where tape pulled off took paint with it
So here is the mount body: If I'm able to work in the shop tomorrow (weather permitting!!), I hope to get the mount assembled and then work on the display base that I've created for it.

Hank:
I see you added the control lever for the sight covers, I didn't put those in on my 1:192 versions. All you have to do now is build the rest of the Battleship. I remember one guy who wanted to, a while back, build a 1:120 Iowa, at over 8 ft long, a considerable project. Easy to over estimate out grasp. Would have been spectacular!

Tom,
No, not going to happen - the 1/200 scale model will more than suffice!!!
I did get a bit of work done before the power went out - With power restored, I've restarted my print of the mount bottom or base as it had one error in it, so that will finish in another hour.

Looks very good Hank! About the only thing to add would be the mount captains slewing sight. I don't know when these were mounted and dismounted. Perhaps Phil would know?

Tom,
Thanks! I just got the mount bottom off the printer and it's drying. I don't really recall seeing the slewing sights in use, so will probably forego those items this go-round.
Storm seems to have picked up a bit - more wind & mild rain (9:20pm).

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
No idea about the Mount Captain's sight. The hatch on top of the mount was still there on the OK City, but for most of the CLG/CG career a discone radio antenna was located on top of the mount with the base in front of the hatch.
Some information might be in OP 805.

Excellent design work! Sure makes for a beautiful print. I may have missed it but are you going to offer these for sale? Or make the file available for sale?

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Tom/Phil - I think that the slewing sights were a removeable item, and as I mentioned, I don't recall seeing them in use - but, I could be mistaken.
Dave - Thanks so much!!! It was an interesting little project. As it stands, the mount is NOT to any particular scale, but the design could be adjusted to print any scale a person desired. Currently, it is 48mm wide and a similar mount for a 1:200 scale IOWA class is 24mm wide - so, scaling down by 50% would give you a part that would be 1:200 scale. Here's a comparison photo - My 3D design/print mount is on the left. The Trumpeter kit mount for the 1:200 scale MISSOURI is on the right (it is incorrect for the IOWA class BB - they screwed up!!!). As I'm not into the commercial arena for model parts, I don't currently have any plans to make this available. At the moment, I can't address whether the design files would be available - I'm still refining them a bit and haven't really considered that one way or another. But, thanks for asking!
Pascal - I appreciate your kind comments!!
Made a change to the display base today - added depth to the deck area behind the mount base ring to give a more proportional look to the overall part - Will run a print of that in a bit.

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Today I finished this 5"/38 Dual Mk. 28, Mod 2 Gun Mount mini-project by adding the Blast Cover and finishing my display base. It will be housed in a small plexi cube and I'll probably get a nameplate made up for it. Here are a few photos of the final model:
This mount model is 1:100 scale as it's twice the size of the 1:200 scale NEW JERSEY model mounts - but, I won't swear to it
all things considered....so, I enjoyed designing, printing, and assembling this little side project! Currently designing a 3D mini project of a USN 1.1"/75 Mk. 2 "Chicago Piano" - also using the U.S. Navy Gun Turret & Mount Catalog cut sheet, pg. 16. That is going to take a while!

Mount as a small separate project looks really good. A small edition of the Nav Bridge would be cute as well.

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
That looks really nice.
You have started me thinking of making a CAD model and 3D print of the 5"/38 gun - probably a dual mount without the shell. I think I have enough measurements I made on the Little Rock plus the OPs for the gun to get the parts pretty correct to scale. It would be fun but quite a time sink.
But it would be a sure way to finally get my hands on the real gun drawings. They will turn up a day after I finish the model!
The 6"/47s will be a bit more difficult. I have very little documentation for them.

Re: 3D Designed & Printed Mk. 28 Mod 2 5" 38 Dual Gun Mount
Phil,
Thanks!!! It was an interesting interlude to see if it could be done. And, as you say, I discovered two days after finishing the first print run that the 5"/38 D.P. mount was well documented dimension-wise in the Floating Drydock's MISSOURI Plan Book, had I just thought to have looked thru it while thinking about this little effort. Using the Mount & Turret catalog cut sheet wasn't wrong, but the dimensioned drawings in the Plan Book would have verified quite a bit of otherwise "guesstimates" on my part.
An interior model of the 5" dual mount would be also a quite unique and visibly interesting model to design/print. Perhaps at a larger scale that may include the gunners (?).
The 6"-47 dual gun mount, Mark 16, as installed on the WORCHESTER class cruisers, has always been an interesting item to me, as it's different than the std. 3-gun turret that most of our capital ships had in their heyday.
