Hey guys, silly question but was the T101 class landing ships ever panted green like some of the marus ? I ask this because on wiki there are a few pics of this class and one of the ships to me looks like it might have a paint sceme on it. Any thoughts?

Hi Redoctober!

i think you're referring to this picture of SB-108 (T120) in 1947:

Image

I couldn't find any sources that would indicate a two-tone-camo for these landing ships and the other pictures (dated 1944-1947) don't show any special camo. But I'm sure that this particular ship, commissioned at the beginning of 1945, IS in fact camouflaged. The bow and stern section clearly show a differnet colour - they seem to be painted either white or light green!?

Hello Guys :wave_1:
Just got the "Japanese Landing Craft of World War II" edited by Ray Merriam (Amazon $14.95). It is a reprint of a 1988 printing derived from ONI publications. It has internal and overhead diagrams of T-1 and T-101 types, as well as smaller craft. Picture quality is poor, but better than nothing. Probably original ONI stuff would be better.

That said, it does provide some answer to T-101 tank capacity: 200 men plus 5 large, seven medium or 9 light tanks, diagram shows at least 5 medium in the hold, remainder topside. It does seem to show the shelf for the starboard anchor, as well as stern anchor (centered on turbine version, oriented to port on diesel ships).

The booklet (48 pages) is o.k., but I wish they spent more effort in repoducing the diagrams. If they had, it would have been a valuable addition, as it is, it is of some interest if you don't have a lot on them.

I found nice plans of the 101 and 103 classes on wiki commons. Anchor arrangement and tank load are visible, as are all decks/rooms.

They are both available in better resolution, but picture size is limited on this forum ;)

Hen,

Any chance of posting the link to the above? I'm unable to locate those plans.

Thanks.

EDIT:
Is this the site Hen? http://navalhistory.flixco.info/H/261414/8330/a0.htm

If so how do you get that plan so clear?

I was able to locate the T-103 drawing, but not the T-101. At http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95% ... g_ship.jpg

Hi all.

Two question, if I may:

1) Is there - from any producer - a dedicated detail/photoetch set for Tamiyas "1st and 2nd class transport ship" kit? If not, which more generic detail set would you suggest?

2) Is there a good book (i.e. with many photos, even in Japanese) dealing with IJN landing transport ships?

Many thanks and cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter,

ad 1) haven't seen a PE set for the landing ships yet... but as I don't use PE anyways, I don't mind
ad 2) I have a MARU SPECIAL (No. 50 "Minesweepers & troop ships") which covers both classes of landing ships - PM me if you need some scans etc.

Regards,
Hen

Check out Jeff Lin's website for his builds on these two ships. They are very detailed and you can pick up a lot of valuable tips on how he made them. Highly recommended! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

One of the KMM volumes, I think the DD book, has nice photos. I'll have to check.

@ Hen: Thanks, I just ordered this issue. Looks like a valuable reference.

@ Quincy: Thanks, I found the builds, great indeed. But it's a pity one does not see which parts Jeff used for his 1st class transport.

@ Dan K: Thanks, that would be great!

Cheers,
Peter

Actually, it's the KMM cruiser book with some pix. For the T-101 type, there is a shot of #146 & #149. For the larger T-1 type, there's T-1 & T-5. Basically the same pics on p1 of this thread.

I have one more.

Peter, have you seen this link to Ralph Kuo's site? He's just finished a Type 101. I think the PE is cobbled together from general sets, but I can't be sure. The finished work is on the homepage: http://blog.roodo.com/RalphKuo/archives/25339712.html

Wow, that's a great build! I will have to take a closer look at this one.
Thanks a lot, Dan!

Hey does anyone have a good pic or layout of what the main mass behind the bridge of a No.1-class landing ship look like? And could I get away using a modified kagero class photo etch mast?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. The mast is just a big, open tripod similar to the DDs.

Ah thanks Dan! I think the corret term would be the fore-mast? and yeah it does look to be a tri-mast :/ I was hoping i could of used a spare photo-etch fore-mast from one of the kagero PH sets and not have to build one.
