I think that a deck that is painted or stained in anyway and not it's natural color would be considered camouflage. That means it can be one color, not a multiple colors or a pattern. After all, even a single color can used to for concealment or deception.Aidan wrote:Thats fair enough, my understanding was Alan was saying the decks were camo'd at the time in question, whereas the photo proves they weren't, in which case my apologies to you Alan if I misinterpreted what you were saying.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
There are many pictures of other units of the KGV class clearly showing similarly darkened decks to PoW (May 1941) at various stages of their lives. But for conclusive evidence that the decks were at times painted see the Public Information Film on the commissioning of HMS Howe in 1942. Part of it shows the dockyard maties putting finishing touches to her paint job and includes a couple of views of the decks actually being painted. With apologies for the poor quality here are a few screen captures.Aidan wrote: I've quite a fair collection of all the KGV's in all their various camo/paint schemes but as yet I have never found any photo anywhere showing any of the ships with painted or camo'd decks. Hope this helps, Aidan.
I would be very wary of drawing any conclusions from pictures of decks taken during a VIP visit by the King (or by a celebrity general like Monty whom the Navy would have wanted to put on a show for). Even in wartime a little bit of temporary cleaning up could have been done and full camouflage put back again after the visit (and I speak from experience).

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
wow.
what a discussion thanks
What if one chooses to model one with bare decks and the other with stained ?
stained decks are simpler to model since one has not to worry about deck planking effect
Now if I just couldget same level of discussion on the two A/A may 1941 fits and on the missing POW radar lantern....
since you are being so helpful I feel like explaining a bit my situation. Unfortunately my 8 yrs old 1st daughter was born with a serious mental deficit that absorbs much of mu resources in terms of oth finances and time.
This is the reason why I had to almost give up modelling and now I need to content with much less resources and references I would like to be able to access.
So let me give you a deeply felt thanks for helping me resume my preferred hobby albeit in much more constrained fashion

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Further info from the Shipcraft book. Both KGV and POW (in May 1941) would have been painted in overall APC507B with APC507A decks - there is an ariel pic of KGV that shows the wooden decks are as dark as the metal decks, so it looks like the wooden decks were painted at that time, no such info on POW though. The only thing in mentions on POW's decks is that when she was repainted info her disruptive camou, the wooden decks appeared to be left a natural colour.
Luca - I would recommend the Shipcraft book on the KGV class, if you can get it. As books go its not very expensive and has loads of useful info. The ariel photo I mentioned above is a very clear pic and it shows at that time she was carrying 2 8 barrel pom-poms atop the aircraft hangar on each side of the forward funnel (so 4 8 barrel mounts in total). It shows a UP launcher on top of B turret and one on the quarterdeck and also 2 mounts on top of Y turret. The radar lantern you speak of is clearly shown between the 2 forward HACS, on top of the bridge structure. The degaussing cable is also visible - this should be an easy conversion from the Tamiya POW kit. I think this info has already been covered but the book confirms it all.
thanks

A question has just arisen in my mind now! Does anyone know if KGV had painted decks when on service with the BPF in 1945 and indeed what colour they would have been? Same goes for the metal decks too.
thanks

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hi Martin, I can see where your coming from re "concealment", and its a very valid point you make. My interpretation of camoflage has always been multi colored patterns, stripes etc. To me, "painted" and "camoflaged" are two entirely different things, eg, the decks of a present day Cruise ship or Cargo ship are painted, but they are certainly not painted for the purpose of concealment or camoflage, whereas the multi colored scheme's such as those used by the USN on the decks of their WW2 ships are for that purpose, hence why (rightly or wrongly) I make the distinction between the two.
Hi Dick, great photo's, I confess to not having seen them before and I happily stand corrected

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hy guys.
Please let me pose a rather trivial question.
I was examining the many bits and pieces moulded on Tamiya 1/350 POW decks and rather oversimplified for today standards.
What is even worse is that no P/E frets available for POV that I know of (I have WEM) has any surface detail for them.
Besides they are not easy to mask accurately
How did you go about them ?
I was thinking about cutting them off and remake them more accurately from styrene + spare or generic P/E a bit like Steve did but with no deck replanking since I made up my mind for dark grey wood decks (btw I sanded off raised planking detail that would be unnoticeable in scale with painted decks, and this will allow me to hide the ugly deck seams)
To get deck detail info I need something...
Any good cheap set of plans, that you know of ?
Or an accurate model with pics on the net ?
In any case how did you go about surface detailing them ?
Thanks in advance

P of W camo problem can someone help ?
Hello there, the HMS Prince of Wales 1941 and her camo is something I'm struggling with, the starboard appears completely different to that of the port flank side, also the colours are not running true with my instructions calling for a lot of dark grey, where in fact light grey was the order of the day, light grey with a werid looking camo but nevertheless light grey being the dominant colour.
Has anyone got a large ''colour'' starboard/port side display of this ship as my little B/W is rubbish.
Look forward to your reply.
For those that don't know, my computer doesn't support adobe reader (apparently a good camo guide through downloading through this system) please don't tell me how I can download adobe reader, its a long and boring story but it doesn't doesn't work ! Thank you.

The pattern was different for each side. You can find two nice drawings here: http://www.forcez-survivors.org.uk/prince.html
You should also take the time to read this post, which should have the information you are looking for. Specifically, there is this post on page 4 of the thread with color call outs.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Looking at this photo taken may 22, it looks like A and Y turret are a different colour than the rest of the ship, any thoughts, comments on this ??Here you go, hopefully this should settle it, picture one shows PoW on 22/05/41, definately 2 UP launchers on "Y" turret, and picture two and three, Pow taking Winston Churchill to meet with F.D.R. Without a doubt, the decks are NOT painted.

Weathered 507 B, that is reflected sunshine due to the angle of the turret sides. The forefunnel is lightned due to heated sea-spray salt coating. hth

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hi all. I've just started dabbling in 1/350 scale ships (Trumpeter USS Franklin done as Yorktown - the fit issues of the flight deck still give me shudders). Basically, I would like to do a Royal Navy Battleship in one of the colourful admiralty disruptive schemes. Basically, the only options until Academy's Qeen Elizabeth class comes out are the Tamiya KGV or POW. POW doesn't appeal, but the box of King George V shows a nice scheme in a pattern of blues and greys. Some my questions are:-
1) Is the scheme on the Tamiya King George V box accurate?
2) If so, what are the correct colurs (I will go for WEM paints)
3) Maritime Quest also have pictures of HMS Anson & HMS Howe in Admiralty Disruptive schemes - Any ideas of the colours used on these 2 ships (Howe would be the the best one to know as there are port and starboad pics).
I'm not too concerned as to the detail differences between the ships, but I know that to do HMS Howe, the Tamiya KGV will be the best bet because of the removal of the Walrus & relocation of the ships boats.
Thanks all.

[quote="Steve Larsen"]Hi Mike!
Oh yes the v-groove styrene sheet does come in various widths between grooves as well as different thickness of sheet. I used .025" (0.64mm) spacing x .020" (0.5mm) thick sheet.
Dear Boys and Girls, please, can any of you tell me how wide the weather deck planking actually was on the King George V class battleships?

Guessing by the well known shoe size of either Roosevelt or Churchill, I would estimate the deck plank width would be seven inches (give or take a half inch). On 1:350 scale that would account for 0.5 mm of width. Any other estimates?

And oh yes: Evergreen sells their finest V-groove plates under a guise, it's called then #2020 CAR SIDING N Scale 3 Spacing .020 Thick (0 5 mm).
That's even finer than the 025" (0.64mm) spacing sheet, effectively it's 020" (0.5mm) spacing, thus equivalent to the 7" true size deck planks I mentioned im my previous reply.
Please spread the news!!!
