Re: Calling all LCS 1 Freedom class fans
Hi guys
I have the 1/350 Bronco USS Fort Worth that I am planning on starting shortly, I came across a comment on a page relating to LCS that said "possibly" in the future the MK-110 57mm gun "may" be replaced by the 5-inch (127-mm)/62 Mk-45 mod 4 (lightweight gun) used on DDG-81 onwards.
I have no way to know if this is correct or not, and do not know if this would be possible or even worthwhile, but can only ask the question.
Apologies if this has been asked before, and thanks in advance for any assistance.
Best regards

Nope, as of now, it will retain the crap-ass Mk110 57mm gun.Peter H wrote:Hi guys

Re: Calling all LCS 1 Freedom class fans
Just curious:
Wikipedia is stating that the LCS 3 will have the Mk 50 torpedo as standard equioment, or will this be one of the "modules" ?
Love the looks of the LCS, but man she needs more armament.
I saw something ridiculous the other day: the launch of the Kongsberg strike missile off the flight deck of LCS 4 Coronado....everyone said "what an achievement"
The system was just dropped on the flight deck like a mall parking lot and fired.....
What is this world coming to...

No. The Mk50 has been withdrawn from the USN inventory.mike_espo wrote:Just curious:

Indeed. If they had mounted them in modules that fit in the module racks and then launched them...then that would have been an accomplishment!mike_espo wrote:I saw something ridiculous the other day: the launch of the Kongsberg strike missile off the flight deck of LCS 4 Coronado....everyone said "what an achievement"The system was just dropped on the flight deck like a mall parking lot and fired.....

I think that all that needs to be done is give the Independence some credible ASM capability. With that huge flight deck, there should be some room for a Harpoon box launcher or two.

Re: Calling all LCS 1 Freedom class fans
I created masks for the USS Fort Worth paint scheme that fit the 1/700 Dragon kit. I also made templates that you can use to print your own helicopter deck and hanger deck decals. The kit decals for the helicopter deck are for the pre-delivery scheme (it has a circle in the center instead of a "T" in the center) and it doesn't have warnings around the hatch that leads to the cargo deck. The only way to fix these with home printed decals is to make one for the whole deck.

You have to print the images at their native resolution. Most good image viewing programs (like Irfanview) can do this.
Hope this helps.

Nice roughly 1/700 print I found on thingiverse, turned out fairly well.

LCS Freedom's Engine May Need Replacement
By: Christopher P. Cavas, August 28, 2016
WASHINGTON This time its USS Freedom.
In yet another blow for its seemingly perpetually-troubled littoral combat ship program, the US Navy revealed Sunday that one of two main propulsion diesel engines on the San Diego-based Freedom has been damaged so badly it either has to be completely rebuilt or replaced.
Its the third time since December that a Freedom-class LCS has suffered a serious malfunction. In December, the brand-new Milwaukee broke down at sea and had to be towed to a Virginia port. In January, the Fort Worth in the midst of what was until then a remarkably successful deployment to Singapore was severely damaged by an in-port accident to her propulsion system. The ship languished the last seven months in Singapore, and only got underway on Aug. 22.

Another LCS Breaks Down, This Time in Mid-Pacific
By: Christopher P. Cavas, August 30, 2016
WASHINGTON In yet another incident in what is turning out to be a bad year for the US Navys littoral combat ship program, the LCS Coronado is reported to have suffered a propulsion problem in the mid-Pacific and has turned back to return to Hawaii. The latest issue, this time with an Independence-class LCS variant, follows a series of problems striking ships of the Freedom class.
Sources said the Coronado is about 800 nautical miles west of Hawaii, proceeding at about 10 knots. The Military Sealift Command oiler Henry J. Kaiser is accompanying the ship. About 70 sailors are aboard the LCS.

Re: Calling all LCS 1 Freedom class fans
Wow this class of ship is popular...........
Its been so long since the last post!
Im planning on building a 1/72 scale hull, but I just cant work out the true overall length.
There are many different lengths mentioned across the internet.
How long was Freedom without buoyancy tanks?
How long from transom to the aft end are the buoyancy tanks on Freedom?
How much longer is Fort Worths transom than the Freedoms transom?
Was Fort Worths extension forward of the jet drives? Or aft of them?
Did all the Freedom class after Fort Worth continue the same length as Fort Worth? Or did they revert back to the same length as Freedom but with modified internal buoyancy measures?
Navsource dimensions are all the same across the class.
Wikipedia shows Fort Worth 2.7m longer than Freedom, while Milwaukee onwards revert back to Freedoms length.
Id be very grateful for clarification.
