Kid, I'm using the Revell 1/540 kit. I have removed the fantail guntubs and the stbd guntub as well. I am in the process of reattaching all of the bulkheads to the sides of the ship. Once they are on snug, I will even off the tops of everything to meet the flight deck properly. I will add some styrene inside for the hangar deck since the doors are open in places. On this build I want to have a clean finish - this is really practice for the other one I have in the garage. That one is already built as well, but I think on that one I will make new bulkheads from styrene and detail them myself. As this one is a gift for someone else, I just want the consistent clean look - I will bring out details with paint and wash on this one. I'll post some pics tomorrow - by then the bulkheads will be in place.

You're right Kidcurrie, photos are the best instruction sheet.
I saw a photo of a Hornet landing and this week end I have to modify the arresting wires of my Nimitz. Well it will be busy.
I'm also making drawings, in order to know the english words for specific parts of a ship. I don't even know most of them in french, so I still have a lot to learn. And I promess I won't forget the photos.

Good evening everyone !
The week end is now over for me, I'm back to real life.
I was very busy folding the wings of the Hornets (I've done twenty of them on saturday evening). I airbrushed some of them as a test and it worked like a charm.
I wait till the whole airwing is finished to airbrush more aircraft.
Here as promised, the photos :
The hangar bay, now painted and with its tie down pads :
Image

Then here's a close look at the tie down pads I painted using the wash method (humbrol 64). I will not correct the white paint in the corner as it won't show once the flight deck will be glued.
Image

I wasn't happy with the kit Tilly crane, so I decided to give them a try, but was disapointed. The Trumpi (left)looks the best, but the crane itself isn't good at all. While the Italeri one (right, from the Ronald Reagan kit) looks more detailed, but is completely wrong for the cabin shape and location. So I will build another using parts from the Trumpi and the Italeri.

I've also started the island and the rear mast, the GMM PE show all their potential here.
I've also found how to use the ftp to post my photos, it's far easier now !
That's it for now.

A little while ago Tom@JAG posted a picture showing a test shot of some PE extended fuel lines for unreping. Any idea where that picture was displayed ? I cant find in this or the post war navy thread.

USS Wasp CV-18 Project

Post by jgrease »

Ok - I have placed all other carrier projects on hold while I work on this Wasp project. For those of you who tuned in late, I have a co-worker who served on Wasp in the late 1960's. As a token of my gratitude to him, I am building one for him. My first problem was finding one I could afford. Fortunately, Bob J came through and sent me two Essex-class built-ups from the Revell kit:
This is what I have to work with after disassembling the two kits:
Image
The superstructures:

Aircraft:

To this point, I have done the following:
-removed everythig I could pry off
-removed the twin gun tubs at the fantail
-removed the guntub on the mid-starboard side
-added a "flightdeck" to fill the viod inside of the hull, along with some styrene visual blocks to break up the hangar deck (not to be confused with actually building up a proper hangar deck)
-waterlined the hull as I will display the ship in a water-looking base
Here is my work to date:
Starboard side looking forward from the fantail. The cut-away section has been filled with styrene and white putty:

Port side looking aft. The forward structure has been replaced with sheet styrene:

Starboard side view:

Please pass along any observations or comments - I am doing my best to come up with a decent-looking Wasp, and this is one of my only ventures into "accurizing" a kit, especially one that was already built.

Hey JG.
Looking like you have made great progress, it was like looking at pics of my Midway and Coral Sea builds, lots of work but end results are worthwhile.
I am looking forward to seeing more as you progress. I would love to see your friends face when he recieves it.

Happy modeling

Well what can i say, it was storming earlier, so i was reading Aircraft Carriers of the US Navy(as one does) and my spare USS Midway was within reach, below is the result, USS Franklin D Roosevelt CV-42, i intend completing her as she was in 1977

The hull has to be waterlined yet and the aft port hangar opening sealed and moved fwd, flightdeck shape aft port has to be completed, along with lots of other mods.

Aircraft embarked were F-4N's from VF-51 and VF-111, A-7B's from VA-153, VA-155 and VA-215, E-1B from VAW-110, also carried operationally for the first time was the AV-8A, these belonged to VMA-231. All comments, questions and suggestions welcome.

Happy modeling

Kid, is that in 1/700? What kit are you using? I look forward to the results. After posting my Wasp pics earlier, I sanded down the detail off the flight deck and gave the hull a once-over. I just have to finish the fantail decks and I will begin adding all the PE I won't reach later. Time to get moving on this. Ever since I got the decals from Mark over at Starfighter Decals, I am stoked to move on this one. More so that I can go back to my Nimitz which is sooo close to completion.

Hey JG, i think it was your fault i started this, i was kinda missing the challenge posed by the Coral Sea :lol_3: and seeing your wasp pushed me over the edge. It is the 1/800 ARII USS Midway kit, a great little kit IMO, 1/700 a/c do not look out of place on these.

Good stuff - I have looked at the 1/800 kits because of the Kitty-Hawk and others like her, but then I would be all over the map in scales. I bought one of those Zhengdefu or whatever they are this week 1/800 Kitty Hawk kits - what a mess. The people selling them on eBay should be ashamed. Oh well. I will post more pics in the coming days. Good night John-boy.

Hey JG, i regard the USS Midway as being the best 1/800 kit out there(CV/CVN), and with my collection being as follows, CV-59 - CV-67 all 1/720 and CVN-68 - CV-77 will all be 1/700 i think CV-41 - CV-43 fits in well in 1/800 especially as they are all the same class, if you ever decide to do a modern 1/720 CVN-65 then get the 1/800 kit for the modern island, its actually spot on for 1/720(give or take a mm)

I added most of the aerials tonight and gave my base a first layer, quite pleased with the base at this stage.

USS Wasp WIP

So today I only had time to add the pipe thingys on the hull sides. I had to make some compromises to accommodate the kit's shape as opposed to the real one:
Starboard side:

Port side:

The pipes are probably slightly overscale, but it gives me enough play to sand them and shape them. After it all gets primed, I believe it will look neat. As always, questions, comments, remarks are welcome.
