Here is my base with a little depth added, i have a few little things i am going to experiment with, so it may end up all one color again later if it goes wrong

Started adding PE to the hull tonite. Lessons learned for my next Essex build:
-remove all of the bulkheads and make new ones from styrene. It is easier to scratch all of the detail on the bulkheads rather than use the horrid kit-provided ones with out of scale hatches and ladders.
-check and triple check all angles and lines. The kit is a train wreck when it comes to straight lines and such. Sanding has helped, but still...
So I added railings to the rear quarter of the port side. See if I can do more tomorrow and post a pic or two. Ugh.

Looking good! I can't wait to see the results.

Everything in this thread looks great! You guys do fantastic work in these smaller scales!

To be honest, this build is getting the better of me, but I really want to finish. Hopefully tomorrow I will complete PE railings and prime this thing already. Than I can paint and start on the flight deck. I can't even think about the superstructure.

Hey JG, it does not look like it is getting the better of you from what i can see, looks like you are mastering it, it looks great mate, keep going the end result will be worth it and i am sure seeing your friends face light up when you give it to him will be worth all the hardwork.

I'm always impressed with the quality of what I see, Jgrease and Kidcurrie are doing very good jobs on their models.

Here's my sunday evening update :
This week end I added the railings to the hull, which are 80% completed. I only have three or for straight rails to add, which isn't difficult. Instead of adding the railings on the hull, I added them against the hull, so it's far easier, and looks better. The next step will be to sand the superglue, and airbrush hull color on the sanded areas.


I also worked on the flight deck, did some painting. I also removed the molded ladders, and sanded these areas smooth.



The little white ship next to the Nimitz is a USCG Bear, from Jag. I started working on it this week-end, and it is fantastic. (it's my first resin ship). The casting is amazing, the fit excellent, a very entertaining kit far away from any problems.

Awesome work Tom, she is really coming along nicely and looking great. hope to see more soon, i have the early stages of the base completed for Coral Sea done, i have found that acrlic paint can be mixed with Future floor polish and looks great, i will post pics of both Midway and Coral Sea in their bases soon.

Thanks John.
It's amazing what can be done with Future. I used to mix it with Tamiya flat base for a mat varnish on my planes, or to repair scratched canopies. Its smell is nice, far away from the awful aceton I use to clean the airbrush.

Well I don't know when the next update will occur, maybe in a few weeks, as university resumed today for me.
Anyway, with less time and room for modeling I think I will sratchbuild the Tilly crane, which will take time. I still need to make drawings for that.

Here's what I've done since last time:
-primed and added PE railings all around
-installed vision blocks inside of hangar deck at elevators
-painted hull Neutral Gray and flight deck Engine Gray the walls of the hangar are flat white

I am learning a lot of lessons as I progress. Try as I might to fill gaps and such, after painting I still see lines - very frustrating. I hope that after applying Future to the hull and a light black wash around all molded-in detail the hull will look better. I am happy with the piping I installed around the hull sides. After the Future is sprayed, I will add the warning stripes around the elevator areas and hopefully install the flight deck by Tuesday or so. Comments and remarks always welcome.

Nice job jgrease.
The railings are good, I guess they weren't easy to put in place.
Yes seam lines are difficult to hide, so don't worry you aren't a lonely case. White paint is the best to see if there's a defect in the surface. But keep in mind that you see it because you know it, most people won't notice it. (excepted if you intend to do a model competition). For seam lines, allow putty to dry a day or two, as it retracts, or use superglue.

Hiya JG, she is looking very good, she was an old ship so would have had a few bumps, bangs, scratches, dents and no doubt a few holes so just keep going, what i see looks 100% better than it would being built straight from the box. looking forward to seeing more as you progress.

John - the Midway and Coral Sea look spot on! Keep up the great work - you have way more patience than I for working in 1/700 and smaller. My Nimitz build is crawling since Wasp came along. Here are pics of the new elevators using GMM PE:
Port side elevator 2 using the original kit elevator with all detail removed and PE installed:

I am very pleased with the outcome of these two components. These are the details that get people's attention. Next up is priming and painting the flight deck and elevators and then installing them on the hull. Once those are done, I will turn to installing the hull on the base and building up the water. Keep those pics and stuff coming John and Tom.

ps- Hey John - I was just in the UK in June. I got there the day before those two loons tried to blow up Glasgow airport. Love London but the exchange rate killed us!

I will post this in a couple of places, but does anyone have any good plans or pics of the Sea Sparrow launchers as carried on ships like Enterprise in the mid 70's? I'm building the Revell 1/400 kit and the launchers look like poop. All the pics I find online are of the latest model of the launchers. Any help is appreciated.
