A great collection of kits!!!
TTH USS New York and LCS1 USS Freedom are a couple of kits i wanted to buy. Thank God i didn t. I saw the metal kit of LPD-17 at a visit in Italy and thought that it would take a lot of work to build a decent kit out of it (as you did). Now i ll buy the U.S.S. New York coming from L'Arsenal. I hope we ll see soon an LCS-1 kit.

USS Towers, USS Paterson, USS Laboon and USS Hancock
Very nicely built kits U.S.S. Hancock brings back memories (it was the first Spruance class i ever built back in 1994)

B-Resina Hms Vanguard and Scratch built Shiretoko Sunflower both look really fine.

Unfortunately, it's not very accurate in terms of decals, especially the pennant numbers are in the wrong font. Also there are some warning circles and details missing on the landing deck. Finding the matching decals is probably always the final hurdle to overcome when scratchbuilding a ship that isn't on the market.

as far as I know the first two at least were commissioned and handed over without air defence VLS. The debate went on for two years or more as to which SAM they would put in that VLS. I have pictures when Isandlwana just came into service, without VLS installed. Good to know they actually chose the Umkhonto.

Your model comes out just fine, without any reference picture next to it, nobody will really notice the wrong font or helo deck decals. As you said, finding the right decals is a big problem when you're building from scratch. Where did you find the one you used?

interesting info, I didn't know that. I was under the impression that there would be no debate concerning the Umkhonto VLS. I'm fairly certain that I even remember the name coming up while on a walk around in 2006 right after the ship was commissioned. Here's a picture with the (presumably empty) cells in question.



As for the decals... In my childhood/early teenage years, I was already building models, mainly of aircrafts. An occasional military vehicle and old Revell ship kits. While 90% of all of those models didn't survive, for some reason I kept the spare sprues and all the decal sheets. This is what I go through in desperation in case all the other decals sets that are available nowadays aren't sufficient.

Heiko, have you tried using dry tranfers, come in many styles and sizes, rub onto decals sheet, give a coat of decal film and once dry, are easy to apply.

Great advice, thanks John. Is there a brand of decal sheet/film that you can recommend?

Happy to help Heiko, Testors clear decal paper, Xtradecal Clear Decal paper are two good ones, you can use blank areas of decals you have already.

Here are some photos of Gwylan models' Steregushiy kit. It was a very quick build due to the very few parts included in the kit. Stealthy ships are very easy to build compared to the non-stealthy ones.

Excellent Steregushiy Nektarios. Certainly a very attractive ship class. Luckily the kit should still be available through Kombrig since Gwylan Models is no more.

Thank you Heiko. While i was building this kit i was thinking that this kit is one that you should definitrly build.

I have finished this weekend the aircraft of CVW-6 airwing (with starfighter decals).
