Hi Tiny Nice job on the davit . As a matter of interest what type of flux and solder do you use? .Also do you solder with a micro torch or electric soldering iron . I ask because for larger items I find the micro torch slightly better than the variable temp soldering iron. Your thoughts on this ?

Hi Dave,

Good question, I use a roll of lead free plumbers solder with a seperate flux which I apply to the joint and tip of the iron. The iron is a Draper 40w electrical one which gives plenty of heat for those small items. I think I need to invest is a finer tipped one for those delicate joints because the one I currently have is getting a little worn out. I have never used a micro torch so couldn't give any advice on their use. The secret of a good soldered joint is to set the pices up in a small jig to hold all the parts together leaving my hands free to apply the solder. The jigs are just simply pieces of thin ply glued together with superglue to hold the pieces.

I have been making the two name boards that are mounted either side of the funnel. First I cut out the board from 1mm thick plasticard and the soldered together the brass support frame and locating brackets.

Next I had to produce the lettering T.I.D. 164 so I used my PC to create the artwork and then printed them onto some waterslide decal paper. The lettering is black with a red outline so I created two sets one black and one red. The red letters where applied first and the the black over the top.

You have made a good job of the board and the letters.

The port and starboard navigation lights are brass tube with brass sheet soldered on top which I then filed to shape. The lights are clear LED 8mm diameter which light up either red or green. The lightboxes are just thin plywood painted black inside and either red or green.

The funnel mounted stern light is made from 13mm diameter brass tube cut in half to give the half round shape with 1mm thick plastic sheet for the back and end pieces. The light is a clear 5mm diameter LED with thin magnet wire soldered to the cathode and anode and twisted together to simulate a flex wire. The magnet wire has a lacquer coating so not electrical short occurs.

Today I have been working on finishing off the anchor davit I started a few weeks ago. The pulley block is sheet brass folded and filed to shape and glued in place.

Today I have been doing a bit of work on the bow by making the bulwark stantions and anti slip bars on the deck. The stantions are 1mm thick plasticard each cut to the appropriate angles and glued in place. The anti slip bars on the deck are 0.5mm thick plasticard cut in to 2mm wide strips.

Well after my christmas and New Year break in Switzerland I am back home and have been doing a bit more work on the TID. More bulwalk stantions cut and glued in place down the sides and around the stern.

Completed the bulwarks by fitting the top rail using 1mm thick plasticard cut into 5mm wide strips. I thought I would show an update photo of the whole model.
