Calling all USS Barnegat-class seaplane tender (AVP) fans

I have found that the photos of the Oyster Bay with PTs alongside aren't close enough to show a boom or no boom.

I have asked some tender and PT crewmen and two of them said that the PTs crews never really went aboard the tenders but, I'd suppose that the PT officers would have to go aboard for meetings and creature comforts due officers. I would suppose that a whale boat could take them from the PTs to the accommodation ladder. But, I would still think that a boat boom may have been deployed, now and then, even if very, temporarily and not during each anchorage.

If I keep this boat boom, I think I'll move the spot where the fore stay is attached to the ship's cleat, farther aft near the middle of the torpedo splinter shield just fore of the fender line in order to clear the interferring parts of the PT Boat. Would this be believable? The drawings show, in about every case, that the fore and aft boom stays form almost equal angles.

Also look at the height of the AGP stern deck in relation to the aft most PT. It isn't that high. Also, it would probably be easier to just have a Jacobs Ladder hanging from the main deck of the tender. Why go up a jacobs ladder then shimmy along a boom, when you could just hop from PT to PT to get to the side of the ship?

I agree with you, Russ. Point well taken.

However, this is just one point in time and just one side of the ship. Who's to say that a boat boom was never deployed out to the PT Boats.

I'd be open to a vote if I should show a deployed boat boom, here, or not. Or at any of the other boat boom locations on the tender.

I've had the thought that maybe a boat boom would be used to refuel the boats at the aft stations, port and starboard. I have a shipyard plan drawing showing a slightly different rigging arrangement for a "refueling" rig of the boom.

Maybe I'll do that, instead.

I'm just trying to be more like Kostas Katseas (aka" angeleyes". He is the master of the boat boom in his models.

I forgot to mention that in tying things off, the "magic angle" is 45 degrees. So the angle between the after guy and the boom, and the fore guy and the boom, is ideally 45 degrees. That gives the maximum fore and aft stability to the boom.

That is also why the tackle end of the topping lift is on the stantion up on the 01 deck, you're looking for a 45 between the boom and the topping lift.

The tender is attached to the base, now, and I've attached the first PT Boat and tied it up. I have moved the fore stay/guy on the boat boom to clear the taller features on the PT Boat. And this boat has its 20mm and starboard .50 cals detached for cleaning.

The .50 cals are PE and the 20mms are plastic. The .50 cal still in the turret are depicted with a canvas over them.

What a difference an angle makes!

PT's need cleats. Brass wire bent into horns with a little CA filler between the horns? The bow gun sits where the sampson post would be. With the addition of the bow gum, they changed from a post to a cleat.

There's the big cleat in from of the mount and if you look behind the sailor's left foot, you can see the top of another, smaller, cleat. There would be a few more of these per side.

Carl, I just checked the photos of PT's nested alongside, and I don't really see any boat booms deployed. I think you have just figured out the reason.

I have re-studied the plans that I have for the boat booms on the AGP variant and it looks like the forward-most boom is for "mooring" (most likely craft smaller than PT Boats), the center booms are for "mooring and refueling" (most likely for underway refueling) and the aft booms are for "refueling" (also most likely for underway refueling). (see Reel #4 Drwg #483 and #484 (aka: image #'s 0067 thru 0073).

I know that this thread is starting to look like a PT Boat WIP but, please bare with me until this one is done. The focus of the dio is still a Barnegat class vessel.

This PT Boat will be depicted standing by to refuel and re-arm with torpedoes. The Oyster Bay has her Bravo flag raised midway, instead of all of the way up, indicating that refueling operations have been temporarily suspended.

This boat still needs to be moored, mast attached, figures added and the Oyster Bay needs some fenders installed.





This boat will be depicted underway and preparing to moor alongside the outboard PT in the nest. More boats (about six) are planned to be nested on the Oyster Bay's port side.
