Re: Carrier Builders Yard, whats on the Slipway
John,
Yes it is the Harrier Carrier, I'm doing a few of the modern ships like type 42 and type 45 destroyers and a couple of the carriers, I've got a few of the type 42 destroyers (3) of them I believe, the ARK ROYAL, and I'm looking to get a few others. I guess my main question is are there any "special" colors needed for the decks, I noticed that your BLAKE has a green/grey looking deck color, is that a standard color scheme?

Re: Carrier Builders Yard, whats on the Slipway
Green decks were phased out end of 70's maybe as late as 81/82, The Falklands war brought many changes, all the upperdeck fixtures that were white, Bollards and Fairleads ect, Lifrafts all went grey as did the ships boats.
I use humbrol paints due to finding it hard getting the WEM range, I use Humbrol 127 for all upper superstructure and I use Humbrol 79 for decks, this I lighten until I am satisfied, try for a charcoal effect, decks wore quickly and often took on different shades of color, Blue grey tone and sometimes even a shade of brown, I will dig out some pics and pm them to you.
Happy Modeling

Re: Carrier Builders Yard, whats on the Slipway
I hope I'm not offending anyone by pointing out that all pictures I have seen so far of the Orange Hobby kit show a 1959 Vic and not a 1966 Vic. The changes are not that difficult and mainly involve scratchbuilding a new Flyco, scratchbuiling accomodation instead of the pom-poms and two of the 3" mounts and building and 'Alaskan highway' around the superstructure but still I'm a bit disappointed in Orange Hobby as the 1963/64 "Buccanneer" refit is rather well documented in the AOTS on Victorious.
My opinion on the other two Victorious kits on the market can be found here:

Hello Pieter,
Observations are always welcome, I have the Victorious AOTS and had worked out that I need to do a little surgery.
My Friend Bogey has nearly finished the Lion Conversion, he is just tweaking the 3" Turret and double checking his measurements on the aft superstructure.

and the finished Turret, the barrel unit moves(unless clogged with paint)

Happy Modeling

Hi Ed!
I am getting started on building CVG-6 for a 1/350 scale Intrepid 1957. I have the Banshee's Cougars, and Skyraiders in hand and the FJ Fury's from a vendor on Shapeways on the way so we shall see how those look. I have been collecting photo's of Tico, Hanna and Intrepid from that era to get the differences correct from the kit. All three sisters were pretty similar prior to the mods in the 60's.

My last carrier can be found under 'reviews', having finished the monster after 3 years, so I'll be doing other ships for a while. I did pick up an Orange Hobby Viraat recently on a discount so if the Carrier virus get active again I'll be doing Sea Harriers and Chetaks.

Re: Carrier Builders Yard, whats on the Slipway
lookin' for... USS LEYTE (CVS-32) as I just found out a cousin of mine was aboard her in 1958-59 and was the Air Officer!(CAG??) CDR Howard Burton SHIVELY.
From what I have found is the LEYTE remained a straight deck CV and never had the major overhaul/refit like her sisters did. So, what kit in 1/700 would best be suited to build her up from? I have a Hasegawa ESSEX, Tamiya Hornet & I believe the Hasegawa Hancock. THanks.

Hi Ed, Merry Christmas!
The DML Princeton kit will make into a Leyte pretty much out of the box. Dragon even gives you decals for her.
Good luck!

Re: Carrier Builders Yard, whats on the Slipway
Hi guys, well the plastic shop I went too is out business. So I had to look for another place. Found one but didn't have much to choose from. Anyway I've started on the waterline and work my way from stern to bow. Post some photos this weekend. And started the air wing on the Okiboat.
