Iv'e read that all the small boats and dingy's were removed from the main deck before Operation Rhein started. But were the boat cradle's themselves and the small crane's up by S1 and P1 removed as well?

Tirpitz

Hi all,

I am planning to start building the Trumpeter/Pit-Road Tirpitz 1/700 kit in the Oktober 1944 configuration.
So far i found loads of valuable info in this great thread as well as on the excellent bismarck-class.dk site.

There are however some questions still unanswered to me:
1) ships boats: still stored on board or are they missing (following the RN carrier-based attacks, maybe destroyed)?
2) ships main deck: are the grey splotches applied, as per bismarck-class.dk, or is the main deck painted over completely?
3) upper wood deck levels: still in unpainted wood or painted over?

Thank you in advance

best regards

helloooo
can answer some of these..
october 44 final camo with spots on the deck. at this time she is badly damaged ..crippled in fact
you will need all the final radar configuration not found any evidence of spots on the upper deck and she also had the greenhouse shelter at the top forward bridge deck,, the portside funnel spotlight cover is missing. however i have seen a photo taken on board at tromso where it seems it was replaced if the is any more info would love to know as the picture has since been removed. starboard main crane is also missing.
as for the ships boats on the pics i have seen there is one on top of the main hangar portside.
in j. asmussens book there is a picture of the admirals barge on the starboard side funnel on its side on board just after the attack cant find any evidence of it being repaired,
the main mast is also extended.
hope this helps take care .... jim

Question about the front deck, where the anchor chains lie. The Fine Arts model shows this whole section as raised, being a second level of planks on top of the main deck. The Kagero book shows it as "outlined", with just the outlined section raised, and inside the lines the wood of the main deck.

The drawings on the Bismark-class.dk site and the K.Bismarck site both show an outline, but don't show if the whole think is filled in and raised.

The Blohm & Voss builders model photos seem to be inconclusive.

Anyone know how the planking on this section of deck is?

Martin, in the Warship Pictorial of the Bismarck, it shows the area you are talking about as being another wood deck ontop of the main deck with margin planking around the perimeter.

Just one minor detail, I think there was no second layer of planks, but the planks itself were thicker. At least I remember having read something like this in documents regarding the building of PG (Prinz Eugen). They could have done the same thing on other vessels...

Hello,
I'm working on a DS 1/350 revell Bismarck and have a question I'm hoping some of you experts can answer. What boats were on Bismarck in mid May of 41? I know the four boats above the main hanger never moved/removed but I get conflicting reports about what boats were on the port side hanger and what ones, if any, were on the main deck.

Thanks :wave_1:

Hi!

Another question related the Arado's position in the Hangar. On the picture below, yellow area, we can see two Arados side by side. They are positioned with the vertical stabilizer toward to bow.

Image

I would like to know if this is mandatory or they could be positioned with the propeller toward to bow.
My doubt appear due the picture below, where the Arado is showed inside the hangar with the propeller toward to bow, but all kits I see the Arado are positioned inside the hangar as showed on the first picture (yellow area).

Be careful with illustrations!

If John's fancy illustration is correct in scale, the space in the aft part of the large hangar looks a bit narrow to have both planes stowed backwards in there. It also could have been difficult to move the tail wings around the mast ...

But to be honest ... I have no idea (yet) ...

In the Classic Warships book he says that the air-identification swastikas on Bismarck were painted over before she left on operation Rheinbung. Is this correct as I have seen a lot of models with them on?

I hope it is correct because i want to leave them off my Revell kit!

Yes, they were (somewhat uncharacteristically -crudely) painted over in dark grey (DKM51?). Wreck photos indicate that they were not repainted for aerial recognition for the return to France. It is surprising how much of the swastika can be seen through the paint on the wreck.

I have just received copies of all the new Veteran Models Kriegsmarine detail sets. AMAZING product Melvin!!

Now the question. I have not found a decent reference or photograph which places each of the optics/fire-control devices on the open bridge or aft fire-control platform (sorry, newish to ships and unsure of the proper deck names).
Does anyone have references on the placement of these devices? I can use the best match to the existing Revell component, but while nice, the originals are a bit crude for confident replacement.

Can anyone confirm that the Bismarck's c35 Flakvierlings were installed without shields?

Hello everybody,

@ Seeadler290,

NO ! Bismarck flakvierling ( 4 x 20 mm guns mounting ) DID NOT have the shields mounted in front of them: NO ONE !

Keep in mind that Bismarck had only 2 by 20 mm vierlings on top of the main tower, and as said both without shields.

Than she had 2 by 20 mm single flak C30 Werhmacht mounting without shields too, at the base of the aft rangefinder added on the very last period. Those were positioned on 3 cylinders being removed from the standard carrier that Bismarck had on board too ( Sdkfz 51 or 52 standard flak trailer ) at the bottom of the mainmast searchlights : one on each side.

The remaining 20 mm single were Kriegsmarine standard single mountings without shields too.

I have seen the Sd.Anh trailers noted in some of my sources previously, but it appears that the axles or at least the wheels have been removed. Is this correct? Is there any evidence that the wheels/axles were stored nearby?
