The next stage is to scratch build 2 of the 4 motor boats carried by Kiev.
The design of these was slightly changed towards the end of her career
and can be seen in the back ground photo.
The materials of choice for the hull is Gelutong timber.. This is a pattern
makers timber and can be cut and sanded into any hull shape. 1mm styrene
was used for the deck and cab. The model is in its basic form. Fittings
such as , rudders , props etc will have to wait until the boats are fitted
into each of their davits. This will be shown as we progress.

The timber hull is prepared .

Each of the sides of the cab and windows are cut to size and the deck is
laid using 1mm styrene bonded to the timber hull using an adhesive under
the name of R/C modellers glue .

All the parts of the cab are laid out ready to be assembled

The cab sides temporarily in place.

The roof on the cab is fitted . Allowances are made for the curve of the roof.

Sections of styrene are used as spaces to support the after cab roof.

It will be noticed that the underside of the cab is open this is to allow for
glazing once the boat is painted.

The first stage of scratch building up the motor boat is almost complete.

All that remains is to fit a number of rails to each cab roof.

The styrene sheet joins; are they flush( melted together with mekpak/styrene glue-or do they need a primer filler?

Certainly has captured the feel of the boat!

Hi Jim The cab is welded with Humbrol liquid Poly and some filling in work will need to be done, then the rest of the fittings to the boat can be added.

Scratch building the Liberty boat . This followed a similar pattern to the
motor boat . Except the hull once carved and sanded to shape is separated
into two halves.. The purpose for this is to allow for the inside to be removed
easily . A centre profile in used to join the two halves together.

The two halves are joined thus.

The deck and the interior are cut to size.

The interior deck is laid along with the raised sides . These are cut from
0.50mm styrene strip.

Each of the three sides and windows of the cab are cut to size.

The cab is quite basic . First the sides are assembled with the roof ready to
be fitted.

Once again the cab is removable and the underside made accessible for easy glazing .

The motor boat and Liberty boat are ready for a trial run. Not I hasten to
add on water, much to small for that but into their respective positions
in the boat bay.

Now the rational for building up a removable boat bay comes into its own.
Each boat is temporarily placed on the davits so that the head of the davit
and the boat fall { when fitted will be in the right spot. This would be
excruciatingly difficult if not impossible in -situ . First the motor boat.

Next the liberty boat .

All the davits line up


The proof of the pudding is how the boats fit onto the davits with the boat
bay in place . Well they do!

Still lots of work to do but the method works .

Hi Peter thanks for your kind comments. The real problem that I didn't mention and you touched on was the use of frames. These boats were carved using the photo as a guide. Alas there are no drawings of these boats that I know of that show either body plan or lines. I wish there were.

Fantastic work Dave, really amazing. Thank you for taking the time to show us how it's all done. As was said, I am in awe of your carving skills. I'm somewhat of a woodworker myself, but I could never, ever come close to making something as exquisite as your hulls. And it is easy to see the same amount of care going into the entire build. Well done indeed!

You might well ask , �What's he up to now� �What's this lot of material going
to be� .What fitting is this?

Here is a selection of the tools for the job.But what job?

This is the job in question One of two large heavy lift cranes. This particular
one sited forward is used for a variety of tasks and is shunted along rails
between the SS-N-12 launch tubes from port to starboard. Quite a complex
piece to make but here goes. .

Fine details within the drawing are a lot the be desired . But the drawing
remains a guide only and not taken in any way as definitive .

The alternative like so much on this project was to sketch up some sizes
to 1:144 scale that correspond to the photos.

The basic components are lifted from the sketch and the parts shaped as per
the photos Here is the main sections of the jib and cross members cut to size,
with the pulley arm purchase partly made. Materials used for the jib are
2mm styrene. In preparation is the base and the slewing drum. Next assembling
the jib and pulley arm to the base so the two sections will function important
when rigging.

What I cannot comprehend from the drawing is which part of the crane is raised... Are the two arms you have built based on an axis and the Y shaped the counter weight? And if so, why are they thinner on the part were the axis of movement is based? Very curious to seeing more progress...
