Thanks again, Mark!

Yes, you are correct. (and you are paying very, close attention) The last picture depicts the bowser tanks. The little ones are for the whale boat and are used for lubing and draining lube oil from the seaplanes and the large one is for fueling the seaplanes from a 40' launch. The yellow resin piece is the engine room vent stack.

The external ribs on the fuel bowser. Are they part of the bowser or clamps to hold it to the deck when the bowser is not in use?
Russ,

Your are right. The ribs are to depict the hold-down lines fastening it to the angled pieces underneath and thusly to the deck. Not exact but, I could leave the ribs off. They are little over-sized, anyway. They should only be as thick as cables.

I have added some "ribs" to the 20mm gun tubs, the antenna trunk and locker on the aft end of the bridge piece and lockers beneath the antenna trunk.

Carl,

How about a thin brass wire painted black to represent lashing cables? The fuel bowser would have had 4 D-rings on the top corners of the tank for lifting into the launch. They also be used for lashing, I'm thinking.

Basically the same idea on a 2 1/2 ton truck. Note the pump unit is separate.

Russ,

My frame of mind when I put the tie-downs on was that of casting more of them in resin and also having other modelers in mind who may not have the NARA drawings of the AVPs' Bowser tanks which shoes tie-down cables and turnbuckles. I think that I'll remove the thick styrene tie-downs and when I use one, I'll use thin wire to portray the tie-downs.

Thanks, Mark, Russ, and Martin! I'm happy that you're interested, and like, what I'm doing.

I'm excited that Abram is starting to get into this class of ships.

I have added some fantail details to my USS Absecon AVP-23. Depth charge racks, empty garbage can racks (cans were only present while in port), hose reels and railings.

This weekend, I worked on adding more railings and canvas railings to the USS Absecon along with adding the Reproducer aft of the stack and the floater net baskets.

I think that the fore mast rigging is next followed by the forecastle railings and then the two cranes.

Looking good Carl! I have a question, which ships can be built from the ISW kit out of the box without much modification? Did any of these ships carry a dazzle camouflage scheme? Thanks

Thanks, Abram.

This one is about 75% done, now.

The only AVPs that could be built from the ISW kit without "major" modifications would be the Mackinac and the Casco but, no dazzle camo on these.

And still, the sponsons and bulwark around the bridge need to be changed from what the kit represents, for either the Mackinac or the Casco. Otherwise, the armament is the same and over all configuration. These two ships are not part of the National Archives drawings that I have so, exact differences are difficult for me to determine from just the photos at Navsource.org.

Thanks Carl, I hope all of my questions arent too much of an annoyance. Do you know what it would take to build the USS Bering Strait (AVP-34) in her dazzle scheme?

In my search for the camouflage design sheets I found this one made for the AGP's: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/imag ... 172868.jpg http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/imag ... 172876.jpg Too bad it looks like none of the ships ever wore this one.

Abram,

You're right. None of the AGPs had this pattern.

I hope that I'm not going to scare you away from an AVP build.

As far as the USS Bering Strait, the following would need to be addressed for the most accurate portrayal:

From bow to stern...........

The two 5" gun turrets are good.
The curved area on the front part of the main deck house has changes: Remove the mooring line hawses, fire hose and portholes and then add a door on the port side and relocate a porthole and add two vent ducts on the starboard side with an oval hatch between them.
Image

The bridge windows need to be changed; i.e. 11 of them instead of nine that the kit has. I failed to notice this on my USCGC Bering Strait.

The windscreen in front of the bridge is too, short on the kit and needs to be replaced along with the 20mm sponson and bulwark just aft of the windscreen. A fire control shack, atop the pilot and navigation houses, needs to be added with a MK51 or MK52 director.
Image

Along with this area is an arch supporting the top 20mm sponson on the O3 level that needs to be added and is not supplied in the kit. (The USCGC Bering Strait had no 20mm tubs on the O3 level.)
Image
Image

No torpedo splinter shields/air castles/companionway enclosures are supplied with the kit and need to be scratch built. (I have some ready to go, however.)
Image

The 20mm gun tubs on the O1 deck existed on the Bering Strait and are on the model but, the model has a squared/flat side on the outboard of the tub and these should be round on the BS.
There are too, many portholes on the main deck house (p&s) and these need to be filled in and the portholes and doors relocated along with removing the life rings, there, and the fire hoses which are too, high off the deck, for me, and there weren't that many throughout the whole ship.

The signal flag bags need to be relocated and the O2 deck house extended farther aft, and thusly the O3 deck.

I would scratch build a mast, too.

The area around the stack has some features that should be removed and redone includiing the addition of the forced draft blowers.
Image

The galley vents or "mushroom vents" aren't in the right position and usually aren't completely molded.
There are catwalks around the stack that lead to the two Twin 40mm gun tubs that need to be added.

The engine room vent stack amidships, forward of the crane, is of an improper shape and should be replaced along with some of the square, flat features (bolted or flush water tight hatches) should be removed and redone.

The BS had a Quad 40mm aft of the crane and the ISW kit has a crude tub for an open mount 5" gun. The Quad 40mm tub would be smaller and there are sky lookouts and surface lookout platforms just forward of it along with a Mk51 director.
And there is the compartment below this Quad 40mm tub that needs to be changed.
Image

The fantail is pretty good on the kit but, there was no wooden decking, here, on the BS but, is on the Mackinac and the smoke screen generators on the kit usually aren't a very good casting.

It is because of all of these configuration changes for this flight of AVPs, and the other flights, that I have been working on the custom parts. This is so that I, and others, won't have to keep scratch building these modifications.
