Hi Dave, the crane on KIEV is a real task - the more you have to start with a sketch-like drawing and some photos. This is where experience comes into the game. A lot to learn for me and I'm very glad you share this with all of us.

Hi Peter we all learn from each other, that�s one of the parts of our hobby that makes it so appealing . I noted that you were using an original drawing. That is what is lacking with Kiev. Although the drawing if you could call it that is of Russian origin, it lacks detail. I'm no draughtsman or have any skill what so ever in CAD, but I can draw sketches which can be translated with photos into the fittings, it works for me and it can work for others. I�m following your build closely as you are using methods and techniques that are of great interest to me keep the posts flowing and thanks for posting .

Here the base is built up using 4mmx 0.50mm raised styrene strip around
the outer edge .The reason for this will become clearer as we progress.

The next stage is to unite both jib and pulley arm to the base .

With the desired location on an axis the next stage is to locate the tube and
pin that will allow both jib and pulley arm to move freely .

Using the pin vice holes are made through the jib and pulley arm to correspond
to each tube

Each pin is then inserted through the arms and in to the tube to enable
each side of the arm to be united on a common axis

This simple method enables the arms to move up or down , essential for
rigging.

The two arms, in place and free to move.

The next step is to make the purchase and hoist wire guides, which lift
and track the wires clear of the machinery . Basically these take the
form of two supports {styrene] linked by a roller [aluminium tube} with
an insert .45 wire which allows the rollers to turn.

These are fitted onto the top of the base .


All the fittings such as the barrel and shafts for hoisting , piping, various
cylinders, and pulley wheels are prepared ready to be assembled onto the
base and jib head .

That is some might fine work there Dave, I have been working more on the website than my models lately, but now that I have caught up a bit I can get out to my own shop and work. The crane is an inspiration!

Next the forward drum barrel is fitted .

The larger of a number of cylinders sited around the base. This is made
up from aluminium tube .

These cylinders are fitted into place .

The rear barrels are fitted.

All the barrel barrels are now in place.

A few days ago I was talking with Brian In Wagga Wagga and he is now looking at making a fiberglass mould and hulls of his Kiev class at 1/72. What you thoughts on that. If I can afford one I hope to get one and make the Minck. That would make a nice view on the water both Kuznetsov and Minck. BTW next wednesday is fiberglass day for Kuznetsov. Its been waxed and release agent is on now. But going away for weekend. Have a few people comming over to help and will get plenty of pictures of the hull under construction.

Hi Mick Now a Minsk at 1:72 would be impressive. What surprises me is the number of differences that separate each of the Kiev's . I've been following your Kuznetsov build and I'm looking forward to seeing the GRP mould .

Hi Dave,

I am still working on Gneisenau in 1/100 scale. What time I have been able to spend on her in the last few months has been dedicated to making the turrets operational. I have been experimenting with some new ways to control the rotation - the theory is sound, but I have to work on the execution to make it smoother and more reliable.

The main jib is fitted with two sections of styrene along the centre.
Additionally two lengths of brass wire are seated along side these sections .
The reasons for this are unclear but they could provide greater strength
to the jib and are visible in the photos.

Attention now shifted to the making of the pulley wheels. The two outer
wheels are from PE supplied by Gordon Brooks . The inner part of the
pulley or sheave is formed using aluminium tube.

All the parts joined together.

The smaller lifting arm is fitted with a length of .45mm brass wire at the head
of the arm that will form the common spindle for the pulleys to reeve the
derricking purchase.

Pulleys are ready to be fitted . There is also a cylinder arrangement that will
be fitted to the front section of the base.
