Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
Nice having the Hammocks covered! Not often to be seen.
That arises one question I never realised: Weren't the cranes possibly covered too?
Great work, Daniel

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
thanks Daniel, Yes I believe the cranes would of been cover too from the painting I saw.. I left them uncovered as I thought you did a really nice job on them and I liked the contrast between the canvas and the iron cranes... I am going to try and carve the hammocks for the cranes above the wheel.. We will see how that goes ...

I hope this is the solution to my lantern problem.. I used the one lantern half I have to cast a female mold in clay and filled it with Micro Kristal clear.. This going to take some time to cure !

I have not had a lot of time for modelling of late.. The yard and putting in gardens . I finally completed the stern lanterns.. I lost a part and had to cast a new one out of 5 minute clear epoxy.. Took three attempts but I finally cast one that was usable .. On to the gaff boom and sail..

Now that summer is nearing its end it is time to get back to the model bench. Working on Victory's first sail , her gaff.. adding clew ropes before I bend to the mizzen mast..

Hi Bill Code !!
STOP PRESS !!!
just a thought before you finish that sail...

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
On gaff sails the seams would have almost certainly run either vertically
parallel to the aft edge Leech ) ( the long aft edge)
( whereas the shorter edge( hte luff) is supported along the mast
OR
Horizontally.... with the seams square to the aft edge ( leech)--either way the weave of the cloth has to be square to the loaded aft edge
That way the cloth does not stretch on that unsupported edge
Now then...== its not as easy as I thought to quickly verify if the Spanker sail on Victory was horizontal or vertical ...
- a quick google search was inconclusive-- a longer search needed--or " proper" book/ plan/ illustration /
or ask dafi!!
meanwhile encs a drawing of gaff sail nomenclature and also some photos of gaff sails --with horizontal and vertical seams
to illustrate the need for the cloth weave to be square to the leech either vertical or horizontal
but I will keep on looking to find a period painting that is of use or can be cross referenced...
.... maybe make some square sails in the meantime!! --there the seams are reliably vertical!!!

Laughing my head off ...
@Jim, are you sugesting to do a Netflix-Series "Better ask dafi!"?!?
But you are correct, the way my sail is done should be correct with the layout and also the width of the sail-cloth.
And also check, the stay sails have a different layout again.
Cheers, Daniel

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
the fore and aft sails are complete... You guys know if these were hung on the standing rigging with small metal eyelets or just rope ?? I have not had alot of time to work on the beast of late

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
According to 'Rigging period ship models' by Lennarth Petersson:
- The staysails: metal loops are attached with rope to small holes in the sails. These loops slide over the standing rigging.
- The spanker: a rope spirals around the gaff, and is attached to small holes in the sail with small rings (in metal?)
Cheers,
Marijn

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
Were those incomplete loops for the staysails? I think it was usual practice for there to be a much smaller diameter rope lashed between the stay and preventer stay (for the main and fore masts), forming a zig-zag truss running all the way along between the two, so a full ring would not be able to travel along it. But that also doesn't sound very secure! Maybe it was passed over both?

Re: Heller's 1/100 HMS Victory
Good point! The ship portrayed in the Lennarth Petersson book doesn't have this zigzag connection between stay and preventer stay, but Victory does. In the book, the loops are complete (well, omega-shaped, but the opening is at the side of the sail and closed with rope lashing), so this wouldn't work for a stay with such a zigzag truss connected to it... I guess we need someone more knowledgable on the topic... (Dafi!) (Welfalk!)Martocticvs wrote:Were those incomplete loops for the staysails?
