you might want to have guy sitting on that wing with a welding torch or something. Otherwise some unknowing judge is going to look at that and think that Carl doesn't know how to glue his stabilizers on right and count it against you.

What's a "stabilizer"?

I had to research it, a little, after reading about this plane in a Squadron/Signal booklet. It said that its port horizontal stabilizer was damage by Japanese anit-aircraft fire, along with the port wing's float. The inspiration photos don't show a good shot of the stabilzer damage, so I improvised.

Not quite done with the PBM, but pretty close.

I still have the stern beaching gear, wire antenna, gun barrels, open door for top hatch, props, wing floats, and I'm not quite sure if this plane had the insignias on the top and bottom of the wings, or not. I have an email out to a vet of VPB-27 squadron asking about this. I also need to heat up and straighten the port wing tip, a little.

Does anyone have any warnings about soaking the resin wing in hot water with acrylic paint and acrylic clear coat already applied and then bending the wing tip up?

Could you try a few holes in the stabilizer o make it look like it's shot?

Anyway, just wanted to say I really like your build and choice of ship!

I will try that, EJ. I'll show the results of your suggestion, later. Thanks!

Here it is, EJ. Some Flak damage.

And thanks to Harry at BFM, a hair dryer and ice cold bath fixed the curved wing tip. :thanks:

Seeking some second opinions.

In studying camo patterns for Barnegat class AVPs I have some uncertainties that I hope some of you may be able to shed some light on.

First of all, these two photos listed as the USS Humboldt AVP-21 on Navsource.org show a different pattern on the port side of the ship. The first photo is dated April 1944 and the second one is dated November 1944. There is also a major configuration change: loss of two aft open mount 5" guns and the #2 5" turret replaced by a quad 40mm.

I assume that between April and November 1944, the ship went through an overhaul and these shipalts were completed and and a new paint job could have been applied, and altering the pattern on the port side. I have seen no other AVP with the pattern on its port side like in the first photo, above.

However, I have another question about the Measure specification.

Measure 32 / 5D is drawn like this and displayed on another ship, USS Unimak, like this.......................

Image

Image

Can both patterns on the port side of the USS Humboldt be classified as MS 32 / 5D, as well? Navsource.org has stated so in their captions of the USS Humboldt. Or is there a different specification number for this pattern?

The starboard side is depicted this way in the drawing and on the acutal ship, USS Humboldt.

Image

Image

And can this pattern on the USS Matagorda AVP-22 be classified as the same Measure?

Image

Or is the key word here, "Modified"?

Thank you, GATOR MASKS!! Kenny Loup created some MS 33 / 1F masks, for me, for my USS Duxbury Bay.

This is my first time using pre-cut masks and my first attempt at such a complicated camo pattern, or any pattern for that matter.

The lightest color, Pale Gray 5-P is already applied and I've attached the masks to cover this color and then will paint the second color, Ocean Gray 5-0. The third color will be Navy Blue 5-N. I'm using Life Color acrylics.

The Hull, O1 Deck, Bridge assembly and Stack are not permanently attached, yet.

I'm nervous and excited. I hope it turns out the way that I'm picture it in my mind.

These ships had this pattern:

AVP-36 USS Cook Inlet
AVP-37 USS Corson
AVP-38 USS Duxbury Bay
AVP-39 USS Gardners Bay
AVP-40 USS Floyds Bay

Here the second color (Ocean Gray 5-O) is applied and the masks to cover the 5-O are in place and ready to spray the third and final color, Navy Blue 5-N.

With the 5-N applied, I finally, finally, finally get to take all of the masks off! This has been a real test of my eagerness and impatience.

Thank you, GATOR MASKS!!!

Thank you, Timmy!

I won't be hesitant about this type of paint scheme in the future, especially if I have the Gator Masks to work with. I like the material that they're made of. I think it is a vinyl. Just the right tackiness, too.

Carl I'm truly impressed with your build; wish that my Cook Inlet project moved along at such a nice pace!!!

Did the boats come with the original kit? I've been carving the 33' rescue boat and that bow has been giving me fits.

Thanks, Bruce!

I'm just as anxious to see you find time to continue on your 1/144 USS Cook Inlet!

The boats didn't come with the ISW kit. They are aftermarket, but not announced as a new release, yet. I'll have to ask to see if I can tell everyone where the boats came from.

I'm sure that you'll cast resin copies of your completed 33' Plane Rearming Boat, won't you? I'd like to see it when you done.

I am allowed to mention that, that 33' Plane Rearming Boat was created by Mike Czibovic.

More progress on my USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38. I can't believe that its been a month since my last post of progress. I haven't been in the mood, I guess. I've just been sitting and looking at it, for that long.

I plan on an empty port side boat cradle and a 40' Launch in the stbd cradle. I'm using Tom's Modelworks USS Arizona Boat Detail set for the cradles along with perforated beams from Alliance Modelworks.
