I recently paid a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton UK. Wonderfull place. Wall to wall carrier aircraft but when I laid eyes on the carrier models, I was transfixed no mesmerized . Forget Kiev I just wanted to build every carrier there. Eventually I recovered . The dream was over and it was back to reality and Kiev.

Couple of questions Dave, if I may?
1 - You recently posted construction of the vent covers etc on the port side - pictures of everything - except how you made the vent covers, or are they bought? Having trouble working out construction of same for Kuznetsov.
2 - I also notice life rafts - again - no comment - if made, how, if bought - where from? Have not yet discovered ANYONE who makes them at 1:144. Found suitable beads for the HST, but they are a totaly differant shape.

Without wishing to presume on your obvious skills, could I make a suggestion regarding railings, for what it's worth? Whatever they are made from, trying to fix the individual uprights to a deck is a pain. Courtesy of a modeler in Canada I was shown a way that has proved much easier. If it's 3 rail , make it 4 rail and use the 4th rail to fasten the whole thing down - most decks have a lip and this helps even more to fix the whole thing down. Same rule applies to 2 or 5 rail - just add a rail.

Hi Bannon Good to hear from you. To answer your questions.
1 The vent covers or louverred effect are are formed from Evergreen "corrugated" sheet .50mm thick.
2 The Life raft containers at 1:144 are part of the original kit{ The Ukrainian company that made the kit no longer exists in fact their last kit was a 1:144 Kuznetzov} and are in moulded plastic . I originally made these for Moskva in large numbers but was glad they were one of the few parts that were salvageable from the original kit .
Yes you are quite right regarding the fixing of the fourth rail to the deck. This only works if the rail is fitted inboard of the kicking plate . On Kiev and Kuznetzov many of the rails are welded to the outer edge of a kicking plate. This is very noticable around a number of the platforms and walkways on the superstructure. Others are fitted directly via stanchions to the platform or deck surface.
It will be really good to see your build on the board, another carrier :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:

Thanks Dave

Will follow up on the Evergreen - local shop stocks the full range - guess I will just have to carry on looking for life rafts or do a little research on 'home casting'

You are right regarding railings but unfortunatly some of us have not got the level of skill of your good self. I like to make as much of my stuff myself and I am rubbish at soldering, so mostly use styrene. I felt that the railings on my HST that WERE fixed outside the kick plate just did not 'look' good enough - so, skills and ability being limited, I felt the extra rail a fair compromise and 'looked' better

Thanks again

More fittings this time two 152mm PK-2 chaff launchers at 1:144 scale.
The assembly is made up from .50mm and 1mm styrene sheet which forms
the base. Styrene tube for holding the barrels formed from aluminum tube. .
Image
First openings are drilled into the styrene tube to allow for the barrels.
The styrene tube is shaped as the top is slightly narrower than the bottom.
Each tube is then bedded onto its mounting.
Image
The open sides are closed and holes are drilled into the back of the mounting
for two brass tubes {this formed part of the firing mechanism}
Image
Aluminum and brass tubes ready to be fitted.

Each of the barrels are fitted and the base is ready to be assembled
Image
With the base assembled the mounting is fitted into place. There are a series
of bolts around the edges of the mounting. These were simulated using a length
of wire as an applicator and spots of PVA glue.
Image
The process of using PVA takes minutes to apply but approximately 2 hours to
harden
Image
A further reference to the size of each PK-2 launcher.
Image
Find out next time the purpose of this simple piece of shaped styrene and
how its the key to painting the model?

More of the shaped styrene which will cover deck levels on the superstructure
and after sponsons. The reason for it being so useful is that it makes painting
many of these levels {brown red finish} so much easier, no masking off yet
will deliver sharp edges. Also useful for preparing the PE.
Image
Each off the overlays which have a raised surround as per the ship are laid
into place on the starboard after sponson which includes the PK-2
