Cowl vents can usually be rotated. This photo of Pennsylvania shows the same vent rotated to the side.

Stef76:
You asked about those hull lists, I think they are so called Joggled laps, that is the side plate has joggled edge that goes on the other strakes (longitudinal line of plates)
I made them using 0,2 x 0,5 mm styrene strips glued to the hull. I made also joggled transverse seams, but becouse they are not so prominent, I used 0,1 mm styrene strip instead. I must confess I:m not shure if later really existed in Arizona but many other BB:s seems to have these, according to photos.
Here is my build on early state, the strips pop out of hull too much becouse of white color contrast, they looked much better after painting. Notice also, the front of the hull seems to be very smooth, it has even plating.

Recommend Tamiya tape cut into the thinnest strips you can handle.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Thanks. I just wanted to be sure, because I know on the 1/350 Tamiya Missouri the windlasses on the aft deck are keyed to be pointed the wrong way. I didn't even notice until the GMM PE set instructions said so, and a quick check of some actual ship photos verified this. I'm going for as few "oops" moments on my Arizona as I can.Steve Sobieralski wrote:Cowl vents can usually be rotated. This photo of Pennsylvania shows the same vent rotated to the side.

I'll be using 0.4 mm tape. That would be 140 mm (about 5.5") in full scale. A tad too wide but good enough. Judging from photos planks seem to have been somewhere between 4" and 5" wide.medhawk020 wrote:NEED HELP

At m Arizona Fans!
Hi guys,
Have just purchased Trumpeter's 1/200 USS Arizona, what a great model! Makes the Banner 1/350 kit look kinda ordinary. After reading the various articles on the subject of which camouflage the
Arizona wore on Dec. 7th, I've decided to paint the model Sea Blue 5-S. My problem is the only paints I have to choose from are Humbrol, Tamiya and Gunze, does anyone know if any of these
paints have a colour that is close to 5-S?
Thanks, JohnD

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
AFAIK only White Ensign Models offers 5-S Sea Blue, and they've been out of stock for a long time. You could always try mixing your own, but I wouldn't know what colors to add or what ratios to use. I can't mix colors to save my life, so on my model after fruitless experimentation I finally gave up and bought Model Masters #1923 Gunship Gray (FS36118) in both rattle cans and bottles. I figured I'd simply make it dark grey and consider it Fall of 1941 since nothing came close to matching 5-S in a premixed can. Imagine my surprise when it actually came out a blue/grey similar to 5-S in many respects. Maybe a bit darker than true 5-S, but still a pleasing color nonetheless.
Note: My model is unfinished and still missing many pieces.

Thanks for the quick reply,
Your Arizona looks very good. Gunship Gray looks to be the way to go. The difference between it and the light gray topmasts match the photos of the Arizona well. The combination of Gunship Gray, Light Gray, Insignia Red turret tops and Tamiya Buff for the decks, should make for a model that really stands out, once I've sorted out the hawseholes and external fuel pipe and anything
else that turns up.

Hi JohnD, You asked about substitute to 5 S, I mixed it by using Humbrol paints 3 part 145 ja 1 part 25 (or maybe more accurate compared WEM 5S would be 5 part 145 and 2 part 25, the former is a bit light side).

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Hi Ville H
Will try both mixes and see how it compares to the Gunship Gray. Thanks for the reply. There must be quite a few 1/200 Arizonas on the building blocks. Trumpeter must be very happy.
Thanks again, John

Re: Unboxing Arizona
In Stillwell's book, on the deck plan for the Flag Bridge, it shows two saluting guns, one on each side just forward of the signalmans platform. The kit does not provide these that I can find. Stillwell's book pages 160 and 195 has undated photos showing twin slauting guns where the deck plan shows singles. Appendix E lists 4 3-pounder saluting cannons. This was after the 1931 modernization. While not difinitive, I would say that she carried two 3-pounder saluting cannons on each side of the flag bridge in December '41.

Re: Unboxing Arizona
I tried looking at a high-res scan I have of this image to see if I could tell from the wreckage... unfortunately the deck separates from the superstructure edge at about the base of the director tube and dips down, so anything that's behind the splinter shield would be "lower" than normal in relation.
Port side is more torn up, but I *think* I see the gun in the wreckage in this photo. The navigation bridge support pipe points down at it; above the chains affixed to the splinter shield.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Here's a couple more pics. The Gunship Grey is indeed a dark grey in the bottle, but once it dries and out in natural light it definitely has a blue tint to it. By the way I used Model Masters Dark Tan (FS30219) for the wood decks and their Camouflage Grey (FS36622) for the fighting tops. The brown on the flag decks is Tamiya Acrylic Flat Brown, but I don't have the part number with me so I'll have to edit this thread tonight with the correct info. The issue of whether or not the flag decks were covered in brown linoleum is up for debate, but I decided to go ahead and assume the Admirals all wanted linoleum under their feet.JohnD wrote:Thanks for the quick reply,

Out of the box you'll find the hawespipes are angled in a way that they won't even allow the anchors to pass through. I had to carefully open them up a bit on the inside, and do some filing on the anchors as well to allow the shank to be more of an angle with the fluke. However as you can see I still haven't installed them yet. The external fuel pipe is easy, just get some really small styrene rod (again I'll have to check what size I used) and glue it to the side of the hull. If you have a copy of Stillwell's book (or can borrow one from the library) the pics will show you exactly how to route it.
