Re: 1/200 Kongo
From the wakes along the starboard sides of the ships in the photo it would appear they were making a simultaneous turn to starboard. Perhaps from line abreast to column.
When ships turn the hull rotates around the center of gravity. This turns the ship at an angle to the direction of motion, with the bow rotated into the direction of the turn and the stern swinging outboard of the turn. The result is a broad wake streaming back from the bow. This is pretty apparent in the wake of the Kongo (closest ship), but still visible with the more distant ships.

DrPR I think for sure you are right about that turn of the division. Some mighty fine seamanship going on there. Controlling in precise formation such huge ships with so much tonnage is amazing. From reading about the IJN they did spend considerable time training..it shows in this. This model truly is amazing, and i agree about the funnels, what remarkable work on them!

Re: 1/200 Kongo
Chris,
Handling large ships does take some skill, developed with a lot of practice. When the Junior Officers on the USS Oklahoma City CLG-5 tried our hand at man overboard drills the best any of us could do is get the ship back within 50 yards of the target (a bag of trash). That was good enough for us to launch the motor whale boat to retrieve the bag.
When Captain Howell (12 years sea duty on cruisers) did it the bag came sliding down the side of the ship as we came to a stop in the water! He could drive that 15,000 ton cruiser like a sports car!

Song,
amazing results on your recent work..you have been hard at it..really wonderful to see that marvelous ship appearing.
really nice work..
Dr, that is indeed impressive your skipper was that handy on the helm. I have heard some are born with the ability to gain that skill. Not sure if i qualify at all from my days as skipper of a small very old sloop, wont make any claims on that account.

Song,
I have watched many of your builds, and your work with wood is exceptional. So I am curious what tools you use to make these works of art?
