I have both the Java and De Ruyter in 1/72 scale

If i may ask, where did you get those plans of Java and DR?

And what year do they portray, as built or......?

I've finally started my 1/600 De Ruyter build.

It's not really a scratch build, as I'm using a mixture of pieces from existing kits (for example a modified 1/600 Graf Spee hull, modified guns from 1/700 Prinz Eugen, some superstructure pieces from both kits, and other spare pieces I have etc), as well as specially created pieces (for example the deck, and most of the superstructure). I'll be using PE for some of the smaller guns, and modified guns for others.

Completed the first stage of the deck last night. I should be able to coerce the Graf Spee hull to fit the shape of the deck with some persistence - although it remains to be seen how successful it will be.

For detail of model, I'm relying on several builds and plans I have found, including these:

The build is coming along well. It is my first time scratch building large parts of the ship, so I am learning as I go.

Most of the hull and superstructure has been modified or built, although still a few things to go.

Have made a bit of progress on the model this week, came down with a cold and the boss told me not to come into work....

I've pretty much finished the primary bits of the superstructure, and finished off the hull. Done a rough paint of her colours in 1942 (I believe - according to Profile Morski and a photo I have found), and am fairly happy with how it's all coming along.

Next will be the detailing.

Because it's easier to paint over than to repaint I know I over-killed below the waterline, but I didn't want to under-do it and have to come back to it.

The new Pacific Crossroads Java is on its way, I noticed their paint instructions call out English greys. Why would the Dutch Navy use English paint in early 1942? They had their own paint, I assume. The tone of that paint has been variously described, but I've not seen anything that ever indicated they were using the three shades of 507 paints. That's like assuming USS Houston was in English colors.

Sheilds are included for Bofors. Nice kit, looks to include everything for "as sunk" version. I still wish they, and everyone else, would cast their full hull kits in one piece. I really don't like sanding and puttying. I know waterline guys don't like cutting and sanding, but since they are putting it in a water base, the lower hull edge can be rough, your sinking it in water. Much more demanding to get a good seamless waterline with joining upper and lower for full hull. Molded detail is very nice, and photo etch has relief details.

Excellent, good to hear some model makers take some notice of indisputable 'advice'.

So goodo. Look forward to seeing a finished build then, as I just dive/d em (before salvaged that is), not build em. Leave that to you experts with nimble fingers!

Sir, just noticed this post of yours. With all due respect, imagine you are finished build by now, so if for 1942 look, hopefully you included the shielded Bofors on De Ruyter, as also were there on her when sunk.
