Thank you Roel much appriciated , I haven't seen these before .Talking of new photos the place I would like to be is in the archives dealing with naval photo reconnaissance , I would hazard a guess and say there are bucket loads of photos all good quality taken of the Kiev's that have yet to see the light of day. That's the frustration in building a ship long gone . Although the Chinese have Minsk for all to see it's the thousands of recon shots that tell the real story .

Moving from aft of the superstructure to the bridge forward . This picture shows
a view of the top of the bridge looking forward towards the bow . plus the odd
missile getting into the frame.

The photo above shows clearly the slightly raised surround . For this
Evergreen .50mm box strip was used cut and fitted to the edge of the roof .


The two sections are married together to ensure a reasonably tight fit.



The next step was to place the bridge roof back into the superstructure
followed by the bridge surround .

As with the after bridge the purpose of this arrangement is to allow glazing
once the bridge area both inside and without has been painted.

The bridge roof and surround fits snugly into place .

Like the after bridge the Owl Skreech director is located onto the roof.

Hello Dave Look's Great! Man, there's alot of work in that superstructure. Lots of styrene and cutting and fitting. Looking forward to seeing the whole ship! I am plugging away on the Santee. Update soon. Looks really good, Dave!!

Thank you Bill for your kind comments . I guess some of the joy in building a model is in solving the problems . Look forward to your Santee update.

Hi Peter Yes the flight deck has obsorbed lots of mental energy over tha past few months , or to put it another way it's been a headache . Due to problems over thickness at 1:144 scale I concluded that the best way to deal with the problem of simulating the tiles was not to simulate the tiles. No matter how I thought about it the problem of thickness was ever present. If the scale had been larger then that factor would not be in the equation. In retrospect I could have just marked the deck but the effect would in no way be as good as your initial sample. Some times not doing anything is better than trying to do something that would not achive the desired result . A paradox yes but as we all know scale is an odd medium to deal with. Thanks again for you help and support very much appriciated.

agree on those intelligence databases. Would be extremely interesting.
Great work you made there. The upstanding edge is for water collection, you can see that on all ships. Practically it just keeps the hydraulic oil onboard after a leak. Gives you some time to fix stuff.
If you want any of those Airbase pictures in large size, just tell me which, I can grab them for you (if you're not registered there).
For the deck, did you think about aluminium foil? Cutting tiles out of that, attach it with CA or something like that? I know it doesn't sound like a great plan and it would take a while, but I think it's about the thinnest stuff around.

Keep it going! I finally decided which Udaloy and in which time frame I will build!

At long last a start has been made on painting , superstructure first ,
deck housings , and as many fittings that are ready .All the paint for Kiev
is sourced from WEM and starting with Northern Fleet grey .

I'm watching this model being built from the very beggining with great interest as one of my most favourite subjects is in the safe hands of a great modeler. Dave i was planning to congratulate you upon the completion of the model but i cannot hold my excitement. Congratulations. Outstanding work.

Thank you Yannis your comments are much appreciated. A few more steps to climb before I can claim that Kiev is truely finished. There remains much to be done but painting does give that boost that is some times required and it makes me feel that real progress is beng made.

The next stage is to prepare the larger flat surfaces of the superstructure
for air brushing. Although masking off is seen as rather mundane I thought
is may be useful to show the preparation bit as it�s seldom seen. In fact
getting this right determines on how the painting will fair when completed .


Where would we be with out reels of Tamiya low tack?

Even the Flyco gets the same treatment .

The red brown Russian deck red is from WEM .

How does it all come out see next time

Hi Dave, i don't see the hour i can spray some primer on Bismarck......
your pieces are fine and i think you using the same mask i use: Tamiya yes?
if yes this masks are fine and i reduce the glue(i think a little bit strong in this masks)using a fine layer of baby powder.
i like your buildings and paint job
