Port Said 1937 Diorama, 1:700 (Update 7.March 2010)

Hey

I am working on a Port Said diorama, dated prewar, around 1937. It was a very lively harbor, with a large number of ships passing it towards Suez Canal.
I plan the following ships for it:
SS Exilona, American Export Lines - passenger-cargo combi-liner, serving Philadelphia to Mediterranean route. Loose Cannon Harriman type kit.
Liner Victoria, Lloyd Triestino - italian large liner, making a stop at Port Said on its way to Indian ocean. Regia Marina kit.
Tramp Therese Moller (ex Drumgeith) - BFM's kit.
Small tramp from the WSW's merchant set.
Tugs, local boats, small schooner, a building.
The diorama would cover the harbour part with a bit of Quai Francois-Joseph and a corner to Bassin du Commerce.

So, the general layout looks like this:
Image
Therese Moller would be docked in front of Exilona (shown), Victoria would pass along them. WSW's tramp would be docked at a corner.

Exilona is complete, and here are a few pictures of it:
(sorry for not too good photos, my camera sucks indoors, but it rains all the time outside...)

Loose cannon kit is ok, but many small parts had to be redone. Original PE was augmented with Lion Roar doors, inclined ladders, vertical ladders, anchors, WEM steering wheel, BJ Modellbau Davits, as well as self-cast copies of Trumpeter's Liberty ship boats. Resin mast bodies were replaced with hard steel rod, hatch covers made out of evergreen N-scale car siding. A few BFM bollards replaced some bubble-affected ones, some bit here and there has been scratched. Rigging is a mix of invisible thread, human (my) and cat hair, and WEM lycra rigging.

The schooner is still under construction:

The hull basic form was made of balsa (bent to form camber), then laminated with resin, and plated with CA paper. Deck was added from the N-scale car siding. Superstructure is scratchbuild, the boat is WEM, bollards and windlass are BFM. Some smaller details like anchors, crow's nests, sails and rigging are still missing.

I also made a tiny sailing boat out of WEM's 27' Whaler to train doing sails in this scale, a layer from a plain paper handkerchief does the job.

A few moments later, the sun finally appeared for a few moments! So I have shot Exilona outside, to a much better quality!

Really nice looking steamer Petr, sounds an interesting project, where did the idea come from?

Hey

Thanks!

The idea came rather spontaneous to me. In fact, i thought that I am bored by wartime grays, so thought, I'll go for some pre-war. Being a merchant ships fan, i also thought, it'll be a port with many colorful civilian ships. About the same time, I have read the Regia Marina's Liner Victoria review at steelnavy, and thought, I must have this one, so one of the ports on her prewar route it should be. So I came closer ;) I then checked my cargo ship stash, and Loose Cannon's Harriman Type kit was definitely a one to build, too, I love those 3 island steamers. And as researching for it, I found that one of the Harriman's options, American Export Lines SS Exarch/Excelcior/Exilona was advertised as "American way to Mediterranean"... So, Port Said is realistic for both Victoria and Exilona! Thats it! And after finding a number of old maps and photos of Port Said online, I decided which part of it to show. Adding a few tramps, like BFM's Drumgeith/Therese Moller and WSW's one is also no problem. Maybe I'll drop in Grimsby Class Londonderry when it will finally arrive... quite a few kits which are underways are badly overdue!

That's an interesting line of thought that got you to the idea. I posted the kit Friday so won't be too long.

Cheers
Mike

Will watch this project as it develops for sure!

May I suggest an Eygyptian or Arabian Dhow be featured in your dio?

Sounds like a good idea! Do you have a good photo of such a vessel?

Looking very good at the moment, interesting in lots of ways, and being a diorama this will most certainly have me looking in. Okay have to say great idea with the whaler/sailing boat which is very basic, but such an air of the Arabic but will you crew this vessel ?

Hey

Yeah, all vessels would be crewed. I think I would use eduard pre-painted figures (some details added) from different sets to crew the docks and ships. Alot of cargo would also be added - vehicles, crates, usw...

How come something as good as your Exilona wasn't or hasn't been on the gallery, or have I missed it ? "Bored by wartime grays" yep, fully understand where you're coming from on this one, this was many of the reason why I gave the old WW1 land diorama a go, its something different from the same old ship being pained yet another shade of grey.

Hey

Exilona is not on the gallery, as I would put the entire project there, once completed ;) I aim for the next February-March, meaning, for the local Modeling show at Oberschleissheim, Germany. Might be a tough timing however - i plan to submit my Ph.D. dissertation around the same time!

Hello there, I hope you don't mind, Jim found a lot of ships under sail, and I found this one that you might like.

Hey Jim

Thanks for a nice photo, have not seen that one before! Really inspiring!

The merchant ships are of course fascinating, and in fact, half of my family are merchant seamen ;)

Thanks to BFM, Loose Cannon, WSW, and Regia Marina we have some nice kits to build, and I hope a few more coming. And with all those old magazines I now have enough plans to risk a scratch build, too!

Hello PetrOs
Two picts extract from a French comics, The Biggles adventures , from an English Man, W.E. Johns.
The designs are from Eric Loutte, a famous French Designer.
Hoppe that can help you, the area is 1947-8, in the comic-story, but the back ground is the same.

Hey, thanks! A few interesting items in the pictures!

Also, a small update - both my BFM Drumgeith Deluxe (and Quistconck) and WSW Merchant ship set arrived, yesterday and today. All 4 ships are of decent quality, the only drawback of WSW kits is lack of PE (and so, a few bits better done in PE molded on, like a walkway on the tanker), and aztec ladders. Aztec ladders are however removed already, and I suppose that WSW freighter would go to paintshop on the weekend.

Atlantic model ratlines included in Drumgeith kit would also be used to rig the schooner.
