SMS SACHSEN 1877 - 1/100

Hi, guys !

here some few pics of one of my past models of 5 - 6 years ago, the german ironclad corvette SMS Sachsen (one of the 4 "sachsen class" corvette).
She was the first german warship to be built without masts and sail and with a new steel protection layer.
Her particular look, with the four tall funnels, bring her the nickname of "cement factory".
The main guns (all Krupp-made) were positioned in two open barbette : one in the center hull, with four guns and another one at the end of forecastle with two other Krupp guns.
She was armed in a later refit, also with other four 80 mm. Krupp guns positioned on the flying bridge and the four funnels were substituted by only one larger.

The model has been built in 1:100 scale, using wood, plastic, brass, resin, and some particulars were made by paper.
It's completely scratchbuilted, except for the anchor' chains and some ropes.

I worked on german and russian plans, after a couple of years collecting information, data, pictures and drawings from many sources.

The pictures were took during a model exhibition here in Italy about 5 years ago.
The pictures were took by another modelelr, not by me (I'm not very good to find the right view with a camera....)

I hope you'll like, also if there are a lot of mistakes on this model. I'll post next more closed view of particulars.

a much more beautiful model of SMS Sachsen, build by the german modeller Ferlemann, won a silver medal (92 score points) in the 2010 "C" class Naviga 2010 in Dortmund (germany)

Indeed was an high-level model, much more good than mine.
I also thought to compete in a Naviga (or here local in Italia, Navimodel) context, but I like too much to "weather" a bit my models, and in the Naviga and/or Navimodel context, the static weathered ships are not accepted, except if they're posed into a diorama...

This is a fine model. Do any of the plans say what the long beam within a circular track on the fore deck was for?

Most histories say that torpedo launchers were added to this class around 1886. However, a book by J W King, "The War-Ships and Navies of the World" published in 1880 says that they carried "A contrivance for the launching of torpedoes." I wonder if this is the device on the fore deck of your model?

I would be grateful for help with this.

What is this for a strange rule ...? Weathering effect on model not allowed if not integrated into a Diorama ... sorry, but total bullcrap as rule and unacceptable in my opinion. There has someone making such rules only thought from 24:00pm to 0:00am

Hello to all ship modeler...

I'm happy to be back here after so many years away..

After many years from this my model of SMS Sachsen in 1:100 scale, in recent period (in Covid-19 smartworking period) I had the possibility to build another model of SMS Sachsen, this time made completely by paper.

In the last years, I've built some paper ship models (usually in 1:200 and 1:250 scale) and I found, at the end of 2019, a paper kit for the SMS Sachsen.

Missing my "old" and "traditional" model of Sachsen that I have described, years ago, in this thread (the model was sold, during a local fair, for raise money for charity purpose), when I found this version of SMS Sachsen, I immediately got it and, and using the spare time in this endemic lockdown, I completed this paper model in 1:200 scale few weeks ago.

The model is based on a kit produced from Dom Bumagi firm with a very high quality for drawing, schema and instructions.

Please, take into count that, when I write "made all by paper", this is really true... the only "not paper" thing in the whole model is the thin metallic wire that is running below the two crane's poles...
All the other elements, included the standing and running rigging (in this case simulated..), every element (included the anchor' chains, the basement of the stand and everything other on the model) is made by paper, using different type of paper, selected for weight, thickness, smoothness and strength...

So, I want to share with you all some pics of this model as completed.

I'm also happy to be back here in MW and very honored to have your very kind "welcome back".

Indeed, in last years, I have switched from "traditional" ship model building to paper ship model building, for many reasons : the main is that because I travel a lot for job, is much more simpler for me to have a paper model to work on during the hotel nights faraway from home (and from my country).. all I need is a ruler, a knife, a tweeter, some glue and a box that can contain all pieces.... Another reason is that there is no production of dust around or wasted pieces of wood or metal... it's very simple to put all into a box when I have finished and get it out when I need to continue the model... A third reason is that I can work in the same period on more than one model...and the new tricks or techniques I learn on a model can be immediately applied on another one that I'm building in the same time...

Anyway..I'm sure I'll be back, in the future, to the "traditional" ship model building (I still have the model of battleship Pelajo in 1:100 waiting on a shelf...) but at the moment I had a lot of satisfaction n this kind of modelism.

Just to give you another idea about another paper ship model completed, here attached are some pics of a 1:200 model of USS Maine (ACR-1) build based on an Heinkel Models kit. In this kit only the 60% of rigging is made by metal wire... the nets for reaching the fighting tops are made all by paper...

So.. I'm trying to be a "purist" but not always is possible

Where did you obtain the final plans that you used For the SMS Sachsen? I�ve got some rudimentary plans but they lack many details. I�m planning an RC model about 2 m long. I�ve been researching plans, photos, motors batteries, etc. However, I am still hoping to find a more accurate set of plans. If you can help, please contact me at : pennywhistle@fullchannel.net.
