Really enjoying this build! Terrific improvements to an already impressively worked model.

Excellent. Glad to see you back at it.

Finished airbrushing the forward cage mast and both spotting tops. Note to self: airbrush aft spotting tops in pieces next time. Was a b*tch getting paint into the corners of the top of that aft top.

Looks good. How did the 3D medium take the paint?

Thanks. Seems to be no problem. Any fuzziness or grit is me being too impatient and blasting the hell out of the parts with the airbrush.

Did some more work on the cage masts. Using the Tom's Modelworks PE set that was marketed with the cage masts (set 775).

Since the cage masts were custom made and taller than the ones found on the Big 5, I ran into an issue with the photo-etch. The platform wouldn't fit over the top of the mast, and didn't want to go down as far as it should. So I scrapped it and used one of the two resin platforms that came with the original kit.

I did use the PE platforms inside the cage mast. Next cage masted ship I build I won't bother - you can't even see them.

The cage masts are glued to the ship, the spotting tops are just sitting on top of them.

Starting to look like something with the cage masts on...a definite improvement over the photo-etch versions.

Saturday I went down to a friends house, where a bunch of naval historians, researchers and model builders got together for our quarterly meeting. Here's Sara on Saturday:

This morning when I was getting ready for work, I walked into my hobby room and noticed Sara was "missing" from the shelf above my workbench. I looked down and found her, upside down, on the workbench. The cover was off, both cage masts and numerous other parts had been broken off. The case also took out the starobard aft elevator on CV-11, which was sitting on the workbench. All sorts of stuff on the workbench was scattered all of the place.

The only thing I can think of is that the cat jumped on the workbench, then decided to try and jump on top of Sara's case to look out the window. He either pulled Sara off, or when he jumped on the case, she slid off the shelf.

Ugh.

Here is how she looked after I managed to pick up the pieces off the bench and the floor:

(sigh) I was really liking how she was coming out. This may relegate her to the shelf of doom for some time. At minimum, it will be until after I skin the cat...

Man, that blows. Sorry to see that. I've got a couple of models that are in-progress and were damaged in a shelf collapse several years back, the only one I finished was the USS Weehawken. Still need to finish the others, even if only for spite.

I feel your pain. Years ago I had the same thing happen. Only wingy things. Had built every carrier aircraft the Navy had. Some were award winners. Then the cat from H$%L found them on the shelf. There was no repairing them they all went in the round file. Had to wait for the cat to die to start building again. Only this time ships. And display them in a closed case. So the wife's 4 cats can't get to them.

Wow, that's really most unfortunate. Yet another reason why I don't have a cat.

Slightly off topic-

In an odd coincidence, just days ago on another forum I posted the sad tale of what happened when the wife's #3 gato (aptly named Gremlin) found out how to open the sliding door of my display cabinet. Briefly, I found him playing with about his 12th mast- laying on his side twanging them until they broke, one by one. His ensuing escape created still more havoc. One more reason why I now do rigging only rarely. Years later, it still makes me tense up just thinking about it.

Yes, I am still married, and Gremlin just turned 18. And I still get a new cruiser every Xmas...

The top of the forward superstructure came off, sheared the cage mast in two and took a chunk out of it.

Fortunately, Mr. 3DModelParts is already cooking me up a new one. Fortunately the aft cage mast only suffered a crack in the base ring, so that's salvageable.

Been a busy week - after I put my workbench back together (might as well clean it while I'm at it), I'll go over Sara and take stock of where I am. I'm not going to let this permanently derail this build - Sara will rise from the ashes! (cue dramatic music...)

The worst Dozer ever does is shoot a drool missile across the room that might have the force to knock a plane or turret loose. Sorry man.

The joy of pets...

These were my favorite "never built" ships. Enjoyed your original model and the (re) re-build looks even better. Glad to read you are continuing; perhaps with less "assistance".

Best Regards,

Mac

While I had the camera out today, I snapped a few shots of where I am with this build too.

The new forward cage mast arrived and has been given a first coat of engine grey, to hide the burnt orange color they are cast in.

I also decided that since I was gutting a Trumpeter Colorado kit for the turrets, I'd also use the ships boats and searchlights from the kit as well. These will replace the four searchlights on the aft cage mast, one of which disappeared into history when the cat attacked. From an old Skywave set I took two pairs of boat davits, as again, one vanished in the attack, leaving me short.

So here she is, with a bunch of parts ready to paint.

I also got the airbrush out and touched up the deck where the old secondary armament was removed. While in the process of doing that, I noticed a chunk of the bridge was missing, which is someplace with the searchlight and davit. :mad_1:

So I'll need to repair that before starting the process of actually reattaching parts. This is a "back burner" project at this point - I want to finish CV-11 and Z-17 first. I'll work on this when time permits.

You're a better man than me. I would have tossed it out of frustration. I loved my cat, but I am glad I am now animal free. Best of luck putting it right. It looks like you are doing a great job of fixing the cattage.

Glad to see you back at it! My 1/350 Lexington took a Cat-akaze attack many years ago and I could just never pull myself to go back and finish it. These were truly beautiful ships that would have been a sight to see, didn't make bad looking carriers, but something about long, sleek and cage masts. I think that had they been finished as Battlecruisers we would have seen the squared off turrets like the Colorado class, so the new Trumpeter kits are a nice source of parts for the IHP kit.

Looking forward to seeing more,

Matt
