Scharnorst, 1943 (Flyhawk 1:700)

Scharnorst, December 1943 (Flyhawk Deluxe Kit, 1/700 scale)

I finished this built in fall of 2022, having started easily over a year ago. December 1943 is probably one of the most interesting camouflages on a capital ship of the era so having one built is quite fun!

Painting was all airbrush with lots of masking tape, using Tamiya custom mix of paints. Antonio Bonomi's, Leon and Asmussen books for references came in handy, as did the Scharnhorst CASF thread here on Modelwarships.com. The rigging is from tungsten wire, and was a particularly fun two weeks of work with magnifying loupes!

I kept weathering to a minimum, meaning the superstructures are fairly clean, while the most wear and tear is on the bow which I imagine took a beating in harsh northern seas. Lower hull is faded also.

Considering I do only full-hull, I try to set all my ships on a base that better fits with the weathered look. Hence the ship sits on a set of concrete blocks on a base stylised for a floating dry dock.

An incredibly well done build. Just beautiful.
