Airfix 1:144 Vasa

Post by M.A.D »

While this has since been completed, I thought I'd share a few WIP pics regarding the potential of this kit from another point of view, my model represents the Vasa in the museum as if it were fully reconstructed. The fine work of Rex Stewart inspired me to tackle this small scale build which is a first for me, so there are some flaws in this learning experience, but overall acceptable. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful! But 1:44? I doubt it ;) I think the Airfix is 1:144 :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Michael,

You have done that old Airfix kit more than justice! I have been working at it myself too with the intention to paint it in full splendor, but I am very thrilled by your representation as it looks today in the museum.

Some of the improvements to the beakhead and the skeg below I made very much in the same manner like you did. Beautiful work! :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you for the kind words Maarten and good luck with your build, looking forward to seeing it when finished. I will note that I used the kits plastic masts and spars as a test to illustrate that the rigging does not need a lot of tension.

Last august I spent many hours near the original in Stockholm. You really captured the look of the ship.

Interesting model of a museum ship with rigging. Ofc the original had elaborate painting and such, but this looks pretty cool as reminds me of the real thing I saw in museum in Stockholm (3x?).

Hi Timothyo,

I started with a thin wash of Tamiya acrylic white over a base of desert yellow which I normally use after modifications, sanding etc.

Then I follow up with thin coats of acrylic burnt umber to desired shade

I then follow up with thin coats of acrylic raw umber to desired shade.

Finally a very thin wash of acrylic flat black to desired shade.

seal with dulcoat, pretty much your basic colors for wood effect, hope this helps?
