Agreed about it resembling the Chuanya/3D WILD 1/350 kit. And, it certainly doesn't look like the original project 65 design.
This "Zao" is not the B-65 design (the "Mini-Yamato" type, Alaska-counterpart) but another "Super heavy cruiser" - the 4x3x203mm main guns, 6x2x100mm heavy AA and aircraft handling area at the stern are correct in that regard. I have to look up the proposed name, but this ship design is surely included in the Japanese book "Uncompleted fleet plan 1917-1950" (Military Illustraded, anno 2000). Supposedly planned in the Maru 6 building programm to counter the Baltimore class. Aircraft handling and torpedoes are placed aft to minimize explosion risks.

EDIT: Google Translator says they are the "Unzen" class - named after volcanoes/mountains; "Zao" is indeed one of them, the others are "Rokko" and "Kurama". But those names seem to be fictional.

Oversized hull plating and portholes aside, looks nice. those are not hard to shave down a bit - smooth out. I wish they stop it with the rediculous hull plating, it was fun to add them in thin paint build up layers, but this is crazy what they produce. It even makes people replicate them today on Youtube, which is double bad.

I got the kit in full hull in my hands. the lower hull has quite the attachment point... A lot of work to remove. Probably not an issue on the WL model. I measured it - and the ship checks out to correct measurements (it looks narrower but if you factor in the small increase in width over the deck on the hull itself, the beam is correct). This is a relief.

The stern is ever so slightly bends to the side which is annoying but probably in hot water can be corrected. I dont think it is a fix for a novice but with work can be sorted out. I think this is an issue you have to check yourself.

The downside are the hull panels, I really wish they stop. All of them 1/700 makers please stop making hull plates. This is so out of scale, and usuall can be done with paint layer build up or even just some pencil marks. It means I have to remove these which will be a hassle. So please, STOP HULL PANELS!

The kit otherwise is cool and I cant wait to build it as I have both - 1/700 Haruna battlecruiser and Derrflinger. Should be a cool trio!

Triumph model now has Prince Royal, Lion class also out as full hull in two configurations and in FH or WL versions. Price again seems pretty decent on ecomm platforms.

My kit had small issues. So YMMW - the price is very good, so assume you may need to watch for any issues. I did measure Lion, looks correct. Im unsure if stern is a little off, the plating is over exaggerated on the hull, but the rest looks pretty sweet. Lets see how it will build out.

It is with the waterline as well. Right along the centre line from stem to stern. Will be a chore to remove too. Then of course there's the slight banana effect. And oh yes, the hull plating....looks almost as bad as on the photos of the Ostrich Glorious.

So...cast resin hull, 3D printed superstructure & small fittings, 2 PE frets and brass rods. Still a really nice kit for the price...for me anyway.
Hard a starboard.......Shoot!

I use paper, Tissue Paper (the kind used as Wrapping paper, that is polished, and not like Kleenex), which is almost perfectly in scale.

And yes You can just mask-off the hull lines for Hull-Plating to get the same effect.

I have thought that PE could be used for Hull Plating in 1/700 IFF you make an inset part of the hull in which the panels would be glued, recessed to give the accurate line of Straking.

Pit-Road/Flyhawk did OK with their Kager?, with the hull plating, but the more recent IJN Y?bari went overboard with it.

But some is just outlandish.
