Happy 2026 to you all!
This is my first build of the year. I wanted to do something rather basic to get out of a modelling slump and this SSCModel (?) type 12 3D kit looked like it could work. A type 12 frigate is always nice and I wanted to do an early, 1964, HMS Rhyl for a future project. Until recently that would mean either scratchbulding, destroy most of an Ostrich Hobby Yarmouth or attempt to make something out of a MT miniatures blob. So when SSCmodel started advertising a Whitby class (type 12) I ordered one and three weeks later the kit arrived. It is a kit, not a one piece print. It has a hull/ superstructure as one part and a 4 by 4 cm wafer with guns, boats, masts, funnel and other small parts. No decals or photo etch though.
As HMS Rhyl was a type 12M rather than a type 12 I had to scratchbuild a small support structure for the 40mm gun aft and I had to make a funnel cap. This was sculpted in Vallejo putty and sanded in shape. Putty and some sanding was also used to tone down the rather heavy engraved plating on the hull.
I modified the Limbo AS mortars so that they would lean out to port and starboard as on most pictures of the real ships.
The project took me about a week which is something of a record for me. This includes painting and VERY carefully removing the masts from the wafer and gluing them to the superstructure. There is a slight tilt to the main mast which is my own fault. It will not be corrected as I have already tempted the carpet monster too much this week.
As I already have a half finished Ostrich Yarmouth I could compare the two. The SSC model is about 2mm longer which makes her slightly over scale but the hull has a better form I think, more streamlined. The two kits will not be shown together so this should not be a problem.
And as the Ostrich kit has decals for Plymouth (F126) as well as Yarmouth I think I will be able to get Rhyl’s markings right by simply turning Plymouth’s 6 as Rhyl was F129.
All in all a nice little build and I’m looking forward to receiving the next type 12, Starlings’ HMS Andromeda. But that will be another story.
HMS Rhyl 1/700
