Info regarding the 52nd Model Engineers Exhibition 1983

Post by Jifcom »

Hi
My name is Jon Franklin and I'm compiling a biography of my late Father John Franklin from Ringwood UK

I been on this forum for sometime but due to various reasons, this is the first time I have used the forum.
I have been looking for some information regarding the 52nd Model Engineers Exhibition at Wembley in 1983 and my late Father

Just to give some background, my father's start in model making began in 1972 when he was commissioned by "Bucklers Hard" museum to rebuild the stern of HMS Illustrious,

He then went on to built HMS Egmont during 81/82, this model was awarded the gold medal in Class F2 (Sailing Ships, Any
period, Non-Working) The Maze Challenge Trophy (For the best model of a sailing ship pre- 1820) and The Premier Award (For the absolute best sailing ship at the exhibition) at the 52nd Model Engineers Exhibition at Wembley in 1983.

This model was featured in "Model Shipwight" issues 41, 42 and 48 in 1982

The model was purchased by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and is sometime on display at the museum, unfortunately at present it is in storage at the Chatham.

he also wrote the book “Navy Board Ship Models 1650-1750” in 1989,

I'm looking for any literature, Press cuttings and Photos about this Exhibition, In my searching I have found very little Infomation about the event.
I have found a couple of "Model Engineer" magazines about the show but does not cover Model Ships.

If any one has any information relevent they could share/Copy/Photograph I would be very greateful.

I did private message this Info. to Jim Baumann as his name has cropped up in a few of my searchs, but it seems I'm not allowed to send them even though it said it sent it?

Regards
Jon
