Which kit is better then. I only know H3eller who has this model on the market I am personally not a lover a Airfix as I prefer scale 1:350 or 1:400 all others are too small for me

you are right,.. Airfix on 1 / 600 is the old straight bow Scharnhorst and very poorly done.

Current Airfix I have been told is basically the same as Heller ( joint venture kit ?? ) on scale 1 / 400.

That Heller kit is the best on those scale you like so far,.. waiting for the resin 1 / 350 by Steve Larsen one to be ready.

On 1 / 700 you have the fantastic Tamiya,..but it is too small for you I think.

So go for the Heller 1 / 400,..if you like put as many Photo Etched parts as you can to make it better,...... and enjoy it .

Looking through this thread yet again, I was wondering, Steve, how did you make the hull for your Gneisenau?

It is basically a frame made of .040 thick styrene (including waterline base and main deck) with sides made of more flexible .020 styrene. The deck was overlaid with .020 v-groove styrene to replicate the planked wooden deck.

For the frame, any styrene less than .040 is too thin resulting in warps.

I've a few questions about Kriegsmarine Arado 196s (and other reconnaisance floatplanes); this really applies to all Kriegsmarine capital ships, not just the Scharnhorst/Gneisenau, but this is the most current DKM thread so I'll post it here.

Firstly, I assume that floatplanes carried on DKM ships were marked with serial codes/numbers on the fuselage to indicate the ship they were carried by? Are there any references available as to which codes go with which ships?
Secondly, did the aircraft carry the ship's badge (on the fuselage or tail) as was usual with RN floatplanes?
Thirdly and finally, when was camouflage paint adopted for DKM floatplanes? Before the beginning of the war, or after? I'm specifically thinking of Graf Spee in 1939 here; I've seen photos of this ship's aircraft with overall silver/aluminium paint, but this could be pre-war.

For ID numbers on the fuselage each ship did have its own set of planes, but as the war progressed planes were transferred over to otherships and such. I have a file here some where with the ID numbers, I'll try to find it today for you.

As far as I can tell the only emblem on the tail was the swatstika, and then the ID numbers on the fuselage, no ship's badge or anything.

I'm pretty sure the camouflage was adopted before the war. In all the work Antonio and I have done on the drawings for ships it looks like the Arados were initially used with the green/black camouflage. For Graff Spee the airplane was painted overall light grey with British and French markings on it as part of the ships disguise when she was on raiding missions in the atlantic.

YES, you are right,.. that was the case,.... Arado 196 were adopted on KM warships on 1939 and the green camo scheme ( sometimes 2 tones green, ) was the one they usually weared.

On the front part was sometimes present an emblem, a small seahorse on light blue background.
I can provide it to anybody wants to see it.

On many ships, as the airplane was reaching the 100th launch from the catapult, than an emblem was applyed on it ( there are photos from the Tirpitz one ).

Not only Graf Spee had a light grey painted Arado, also Scheer on the Ocean's raid for some time did the same.

Pay attention to Graf Spee photos : if the airplane is a biplane, than is not the Arado 196 but the Heinkel HE 60 prewar one she had, before the Arado 196 was adopted.
In that case, it was only light grey painted.

I've seen it in the box at an IPMS convention last year. It looks pretty nice. It purports to be a 1943 version, but the first thing I noticed was that the model had a very nicely done eagle (can't recall the German name for it) molded onto the stern. That was removed shortly after the war started in 1939.

I'm curious to see what she is like - keep us posted.

I'll try to post some photos tonite yes it does have the eagle on the stern, it also came with the last set of Steve's barrels for the main and secondary guns, aa guns are bmk.
