ships / ship museums in Italy?

Now that i think about it, i wouldn't mind doing some nautical related things while over in Italia, anyone know of anything?

in italy they are two naval museum, one in venice and one in la spezia, both in the respective arsenal .

The Museums in La Spezia and Venice are the best as far as the Ragia Marina and Marina Militare are concerned. If you have time the "Galata - Museo del Mare" in Genoa is worth of a visit (and, on the contrary of the others, it is an ultra-modern museum. La Spezia is one hour from Genoa by train. The nearby Acquarium is stunning.

There are many other reasons to skip Pompeii for Venice! Venice is probably my favorite European city. Just be aware that if you go during the heat of the summer that the canals can get a bit ripe and hard on the nose.

really? i've had alot of people tell me Venice isn't worth it other than to say you've been there?

Venice isn't worth??? Oh boy... By far the most fascinating town in Europe... and I have seen most of it.
The only problem in Venice are the tourists (the usual places are very crowdy... build your own path out of the beaten tracks) and the restaurants for the tourists .

How long are you going to stay? Tuscany by itself has tenth of towns worth to be visited, starting with Florence and Pisa. In Leghorn (Livorno in reality) there is the Navy academy, with a museum tha can be visited (check the timetable). Rome is a 2,5 hours drive.
Your best choice could be taking a train/car/motorbike (even better in Tuscany, you can appreciate the lovely roads and views) to Florence, from there everything (but Pompei...) is within 3 hours of train or less ( just a little more for Genoa).

ARH - wednesday morning!

Stefano - I'll be there for a month. Siena (obvioulsy), Rome, Florence, Pisa, Assisi and a few other places are on the list but most only for 2 or 3 days. I have a few free weekends that i'm planning my own trips on.

Are you going to the Paolo (sp?) ?
