What was the oldest US Navy Battleship hull to serve completely through WW2?

USS Wyoming (BB 32), commissioned 25 Sep 1912, decommissioned 1 Aug 1947. True she wasn't in a combat role the later part of the war (used for gunnery training after her main turrets were replaced with 5" mounts) but she was still on the USN roster.

In what role? USS Kearsarge (BB-5) was converted to a crane ship and served in that capacity through WWII.

Am I officially a ship geek now?

Actually, since he said "hull", I think we can include Crane Ship No. 1, ex-Kearsarge in the list. Oregon was also used as a floating magazine, surviving at Guam into the 1950s.

Also, USS Oregon (BB-3)'s hull actually also survived throughout WWII and were used in various misc storage hulk capacity.

If you count that as serving.

Hmm seems the way I asked the question wasn't quite specific enough. My original thought ws that the answer was USS Kearsarge serving as Crane Ship #1 since it had an active role throughout the war. However if you want to get really technical about service then Oregon would be correct. Oregon was even known to get underwa by herself in 1948 thanks to a passin storm. Good job guys.

well,

Arizona and Oklahoma were the only one still in the US Navy that were sunk in ww2 in addition to Utah (BB-31?) also sunk at Pearl as well, as a target ship... i believe AG-16., but i have a hunch you are thinking of something we maybe sold or loaned out that was sunk?

I believe in that case you mean Lemnos and Kilkis, sunk in April '41 by German Aircraft....

Formerly USS Mississippi (BB-23) and USS Idaho (BB-24).

Not true. They were the only active US battleships to be sunk without being salvaged and restored to service. Several other US battleships were also sunk. Some where not in active service as a battleship at the time, and others were recovered and returned to service.

Define sunk. Is a hull resting on shallow bottom but otherwise still has residual bouyonce considered sunk?

I will guess USS Arizona was the first, her magazine detonated at around 8:06 AM and she her bow must have been on the bottom within seconds. USS Utah was probably the second, having begun the capsizing roll some time before 8:10 AM and on her beam ends by 8:10 AM. Oklahoma probably didn't roll over until several minutes after that.

yep those are the two unlucky BB's sunk during the opening days of Germany's invasion of Greece.

USS Washington (BB-47). Expanded as a target after construction was canceled under Washington Treaty.
