Trumpy 1/700 Nimitz finished!

Post by jgrease »

Finally - the last of the planes are done and I added the rest of the antennas, so I am as done as I will get. The only thing left is to flat seal it when the weather gets warmer. Here are a couple of pics:
Overall shot of CVN-68:

Overview of the A7s of VA-86 Sidewinders:

And finally, the completed flight deck around the island - added the warning sign from the GMM Supercarrier decal set and a couple of vehicles - a helo from HC-2 is just visible behind the parked E2:

Please feel free to pass along observations and other remarks. Thanks for indulging me. Next up - I really want to finish the 1/540 Wasp for my friend, and I'll also be working on my 1/720 Enterprise.

Thanks gents. The feature I liked most on the Trumpeter Nimitz kit is the flight deck detail. I actually didn't mind filling in all of those tie-down holes. If I could figure out an easy way to do it on all of my carriers, I'd do it. The killer is all of those planes - especially with the Starfighter Decals. Each plane became its' own project. Ugh. Well, in any event, I'm glad to have it under my belt now. I've been putting around with the island structure of the Wasp (I believe I posted pics of the hull and flight deck already), and while it won't be 100% accurate, it will capture the essentials. I'll have something posted as soon as I have progress.

:heh: :heh: , Yeah, with the Starfighter decals each aircraft is a model in its own right, just wish we had a dedicated weapons set in 1/700, i will have pics of my FDR progress tomorrow, just about cracked the port side sponsons, the island is coming along well, just got to redo the mast, not happy with the one i have made.

Cool work jgrease. It would be better if the radar mast was made from PE

LOoks outstanding, I really love the water!!
A ship is always referred to as "she" because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder.

Nick - I did this kit just stock with some PE railing I had left over. My next couple of builds will feature PE radars and other details. Jason - the water is the included water base that came with it from Trumpeter. Unfortunately I won't have room for it in my display case. Thanks again for the feedback guys.

Hey JG, She looks great with or without PE, ppl seem to forget that OOB builds are possible and that great looking models are possible from OOB, i remember the days when it was OOB or Scratch it, Young ones these days are spoilt rotten. The Trumpy bases are great but are a little too big in my opinion. I look forward to seeing your next builds.

:Tirade:

Still working away at it. Got the flight deck shape almost finished. Same with the Island, which is a combination of Trumpy platforms and a spare Dragon Island. Still have to finish up the hull blisters and start work on the bow. If I ever do this again, it will be with the Dragon kit. The Trumpy is far, far, too over engineered. Great detail, but putting it together is a huge pain in the @#$ :mad_1: Funny how their Battleships and Cruisers go together so well but their carriers are awful.

Good stuff as always John. I am finishing up work on my USS Wasp, which is certainly not as accurate as it could be, but given my available time, I'd like to finish it soon. Here are a couple of pics:
