Calling all Spanish Juan Carlos I (LHD) landing helicopter dock/aircraft carrier fans

Post by Francisco P. de Nanclares »

Hi all.

LHD Juan Carlos I was launched yesterday at 1809 local time. A milestone for the Spanish Navy, as it is for the RAN. The launching sequence follows:

They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.

The era of stealth-design has really put a damper on building nice looking ships. The fwd facia just under the bridge windows looks like an old streamlined locomotive...

Holla Francisco!

Gracias por la partilla!
A very interesting ship that dwarfs the Prince de Asturias :) (father bigger than the son ;) )
It would be interesting to see models of both ships

Still way off, Kym. I seem to recall Navantia is scheduled to start cutting steel next year, so launching may be late 2010 or somewhere around that. I will check with them and will let you know. Aussies are beginning to show up around here. Very few yet, but the invasion has begun!

Cheers.
Pachi.

Will RAN buy any F-35B for these?. Both ship are large enough to let them only with helos. Probably one of these will be a big disco for our daughters! lol
Sometimes I think we have built the most expensive hospital of the world. Congratulations ZP!.

Well she won't win any beauty contests, but she looks like a capable ship. And at 751' she's not small either. Thanks for sharing.

IIRC, she is in the 27.000 tons full load range. Biggest warship ever built in Spain, and one of the biggest european vessels nowadays. Only behind Charles de Gaulle and HMS Ocean?

The Govt.'s official statement is that the two ships, to be named HMAS Canberra and Adelaide, are scheduled to enter service with the Royal Australian Navy from 2012, so launching may be by 2010-2011; but given the history of recent Aust. naval ship building projects, the in-service date may stretch to 2013/14 - fingers-crossed.

Highly unlikely, due to current decisions on strategic policy, defence econmics, and probably inter-service resource competition.

But enough of all that serious stuff :cool_2: , . . . .

I look forward to seeing this ships entering service.

I dont think so, though nothing has been said in that regard. Anyway the flagship title is more unoffical than anything, and PdA is awaiting JCI comissioning to enter mid-life overhaul. Then, PdA will still be the only aircraft carrier (even though a pocket one) in the Spanish Navy, JCI being an amphibious.

Can anyone help with some simple line drawings. I would like to build the Australian version. If the lines are good enough even build in scale 1/72.
Building
1/72 Admiral Kuznetsov
1/72 Frunze Russian Battle cruiser
1/72 Steregushchy-class corvette

Does anyone know of any drawings for Juan Carlos I (or for that matter Principe D'Asturias)? I'm aiming to build one or both at 1/72 scale. Thanks, "F86"
