1/144 Kiev by Dave Wooley

There are also a number of whip type aerials but with slightly differing
bases and peculiar to the Kiev�s. The first type is very simple and involves
using 4mm square styrene strip , 1mm o.d brass tube, a small PE hand wheel,
and a length of .31 mm brass wire for the aerial .

The next stage is to assemble each of the components .

This aerial is to be sited on a small platform either side of the bridge .

The next type is formed using the same type of tube but the aerial base is
split.
Once again the components that make up the aerial array.

Same components but the base is set at an angle. This is because it is
located to the side of the superstructure at an angle.

All the components assembled together.

One of the arrays in place . This of course can be removed for painting.

Even though they are at 1:144 they remain small detail. but eventually its lots of the small details that makes the model.

The next job was to build up a small deck housing forward of the superstructure .
The aim was to construct this deck housing so the roof was removable ,
allow for internal glazing upon completion of the painting. Note the aerial
arrays are in place .

Not quite . There will be much glazing to do. All the early preparation is to allow for glazing with out the problem of having to be pulling things apart. The bridge at either end of the superstructure is done the same way. It will all be airbrushed then the glazing is to be slotted into pre formed internal frames. I avoid addhesive of any kind , one wrong move and the glazing is easily fogged.

I would ask one thing. Not sure if its an optical illusion. Can we see the props and rudders of your ship please. (side and back shots)

Hi Mick this is the best shot I have . I can't take any shots aft looking towards, the rudders and props as the space is to confined . I'll have to wait untill I can move the Kiev out of doors for spraying.
I'm presently working on the deck and the inside of the elevator.

Dave, Im always amazed when I see how small the props are on these large vessels, Iron Duke only has small props compared to the sheer size of the ship, but they push them along very well, Kiev sailed very well , and fast when you tested out the hull,

Hi Ron When I watch the full size ships I can get a good grasp of how they perform and relate that to the model. Yes the props are 30mm , certainly not large but they work well. I had these made by George Sitek . Were did you get your props for the Iron Duke. Surprisingly the turning circle on Kiev is quite good and she responds to the helm well but even at 1:144 it's a big model to move around.

Dave The props came from Prop Shop, the shafts from Steve Web Models and I altered them myself.
