Weathering guide
If you think the photo is a nice example of weathering to guide some "rust" painting on a model, post it here please!
The idea of the pictures is to show modellers what rust and varying surface effects actually looks like.
Many modellers take on the task of weathering without studying the real life examples to see just how they form.

Re: Weathering guide
Of course the above photos are from extremes conditions of rust, but you can have a notion of what really happens to steel when exposed to salt water...... but you can imagine here that less is better.....

Re: Weathering guide
Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides, usually red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances.[1] Rust consists of hydrated iron(III) oxides Fe2O3nH2O and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH), Fe(OH)3). Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass eventually converts entirely to rust and disintegrates.
When in contact with water and oxygen, or other strong oxidants and/or acids, iron will rust. If salt is present as, for example, in salt water, it tends to rust more quickly, as a result of the electro-chemical reactions

Weathering as peeling paint, not rust ( yet)....... rust will be in the next phase.

Re: Weathering guide
Thank you for this very much needed guide. I would ask other modelers to post their pictures of real life weathere ships which can be considered as examples for weathering work.
I would be thankful for rust on subs (not too heavy rust
)
Here is my modest contribution (King George photo is not photoshop but real life color photo - they were very rare and costly at that time).

Re: Weathering guide
Great idea jimmy.
This one should be marked as sticky, i would suggest.
Its such a central point of interesst and very valuable for modelers.
At marinewerft.de we have a similar thread from the first day on.

Note the damages at the colors caused by the anchor chain at the stem

A nice heavy weathered hull.

Note the various shades of grey. Not visible anymore when away far enough.

Weathering caused by rubber of tugs fenders

Flightdeck weathering

Weathering at a hulk.
Check out this valuable and further links. You will find more then just weathering:

And last but not least, my absolute highlight:

Some of these pictures there a pieces of art IMHO. Its a true inspiration for
any diorama builder.

Re: Weathering guide
Thanks for making it sticky!
Some more Materials:

Note the "whiteish" shades over the anti fouling red below CWL

Must be really beautyfull in color. Imagine the contrast between
the bright camouflage colors and the rusty browns.

Re: Weathering guide
Here is USS "George Washington". Pay attention that rusty is only at about the water line and right above, where salt water beats.
The superstructure is perfect, and intact.
Rain contributes to make "tears" of rusty.

Re: Weathering guide
Hi Jimmy
What realy makes me wonder on the last picture above, is the how the "solved" metal/rust pigments makes its way running down the hull.
Sharp edege at the left side, smooth blending at the right. Ihave seen this at several other pictures as well.
Any idea how this can be happen?
attached a nice color shot of a british Escort
