1/200 nagato scratch built

hello herbieham,the tape i used is scotts brand masking tape from 3m.the biggest problem is cutting it to width.what i did to cut it was tape, a long piece sticky side up onto a flat surface.then mark the width ,then take a straight edge and lay it on the throw away side and cut it with an xacto knife.the reason for putting the ruler on the discard side is so it won't take the stickyness off the tape.after i put it on the hull i coated it with future acrilyic ,just to seal things up.

well i decided to test my stress level with some castings,it is nail biting time,one never knows if they are going to release or destroy a master.it came out ok.there are two kinds of mould release i use synlube 1000 with silicone and 531 without.the one without silicone for some reason makes styrene sticky,so now i test them on a piece of styrene first.i should throw the one away ,but it works ok for casting but no good for moulds.

Hello Russ here is some photos of my Nagato. This is 1/350 scale (reduced from Fly model kit)

Actually I�m working in the hull trying to simulate the plates of steel; for this, I have covered the surface with cardboard.

I�ve applied a first coat of acrylic paint; then I will polish to apply the definitive coating.

Your model is really wonderful; 1/200 scale is a great option for scratch build!!!!!

just another update on the 16"guns,very complecated assembly.because of the year modeled they will have triple 25mm,s on #2 and #3 guns.to make the practice gun mounts onto the barrels ,i used the same idea of wrapping brass rod around the shank of a file and nipping them with a wire nipper.blast bags will be white glue,just a thought, use styrene rod not brass for support,the glue covers the styrene much better.barrels are from gpm in poland,nice barrels, and very prompt service

thanks for the pic tommy,well i am jumping around again,i have been building the triple 25 m.m it takes me 2 hours to build each one,and that does not include all the parts,as i said before my fingers just do not allow me to glue a part that i can hardly see to anouther part i can't see .so to really get my blood pressure up i moved on to the pagoda,it's like the builders just started building and adding decks and levels where ever they thought they needed to hang something.there are so many kinks and jogs it gets very confusing.it would be nice if there where three elevations of every deck,yes i know there are 3d drawings,i have them but some decks have 2 or three sub levels,and if the drops are not the right distance the next level will not match up.as dave wooley says my garbage pail is filling up again.but hey ,if it was easy every one would be building scale model ships

Yes it can be done, and the results will be spactacular... Every time you drop a foulup in the trash, remember that it will be worth it in the end!



I'll be doing the same thing very soon,(hullwork, plating, superstructure), So I'm watching all IJN BB threads with great interest...

well ,thanks to jose and all the other nagato guys,the tower is rough't in to level 4,i threw away the first two levels with the windows ,because when trying to drill out the tubing holes they did not line up.i want to be able to have all of the decks removable as to be able to work on them by themselves.i was trying to get them so the rods would slide in from the top,this proved to be not possible for me,i could not get all 7 of them to line up, if they where not exact they would pull the tower off center .so this is my method it is a combination of what jose did and my brain wave.i took the right size tubing and went to the next size smaller that slides inside.all the holes in the decks are the proper diameter,and when i slide the smaller tube in, there is some slack this made the tower easy to keep plum.then i cut pieces of the right sized tube to fit between the levels,glued to one level only.this seems to work fairly well,i can assemble the tower and take it apart easily.heres some pics that i hope explain things.i am sure there is someone who has done it this way and if so thanks,i just did not find it looking around. i hope this makes sense,if there are any questions i will try to answer them

this might seem like the same thing ,but i am very pleased the way the decks go together,it takes only 30 sec. to put on and take off all the levels.now it is easy to work on the differant levels ckecking and double checking the fit.

This method is very similar to a method discribed by Dave Wooley for his Tirpitz build I think...

Very impressive result and method... And the photos are very helpful...

Are you using any power tools for your builds?

yes i belive you are right,it was dave wooley.it works great the larger tube glued to the deck keeps it at the right height and sqaure.my most used power tools are a dremel,small scroll saw, a combination belt and disc sander,and a drill press.

hi all nagato guys,i have been playing with my posts trying to get my pics to come out as close to the maximum size allowed,one can't just stretch&skew a set percentage because all pics are not the same amount of picels,so some may be 50% and others may be 25% smaller.heres a few test pics,they came out alot better, much bigger than the other ones.
